The Columbia was an ex. German vessel by the same name. She was built by Johan Lange, Vegesack, Germany in 1846. Burden was 224 Norwegian Commercial lasts. In 1861 the Columbia was bought by the Rød brothers of Tjøme for 12,000 daler from the Bremen firm of D. H. Watjen & Co. The Columbia sailed with emigrants from Christiania to Quebec in 1867, 1869, and 1870. In 1869 the bark Columbia, burden 451 tons, arrived at Quebec on June 12. She had departed from Christiania on Apr. 24. She was sailing in ballast, and was carrying 133 steerage passengers. There was one birth and ono death on the voyage. Mastered was Capt. O. J. Rød, with a crew of 12. In 1870 the bark Columbia departed from Christiania Apr. 26, and arrived at Quebec on June 20. She was sailing in ballast, and was carrying 270 steerage passengers and 1 cabin passenger. All well at arrival. There had been one birth on the voyage; son of Ole Olsen (30) and Live Olsdatter (30). Master was Capt. L. M. Hansen, with a crew of 12. She was lost after a collision with a whale in the St. Lawrence on a voyage from Quebec in ballast. The crew was rescued by the steamer P. Coland.
