This steamship was built by Caird & Co. at Glasgow in 1872 for the Hamburg America Line (Hamburg - West Indies route) as the Franconia. The "Franconia" was a sister of the "Rhenania (1). In 1876 she collided with the "Strathclyde", with the loss of 38 lives. She was purchased by C.G.T. (French Line) in 1878 and was renamed "Olinde Rodrigues". The ship made some occasional voyages with emigrants and other passengers between Le Havre and New York for the French Line, but was mainly used for the West Indies service between Havre - Bordeaux - Colon. In 1915 she was sold for scrapping.
