Hanna Violet would have only been 19 in 1910, so I doubt she had been in CA very long. In 1910 she was living in a boarding house with her older sister Millie (Amelia) and working as a waitress. I have reached out to 2 West Coast cousins who actually knew Hannah Violet to see if they knew anything more about her move to CA. I also checked the local papers in Humboldt Co, but I couldn't find any mention of the move.

Yes, this is my great-aunt who told the story of Michael Mathiason calling her and how she quickly hung up. I don't know how that translated to others that he was in CA.
If you know a more definite date when Hanna was in California than 1910 that might help with understanding. So sometime after 1910 Michael Mathiason rustled up a phone number for his daughter in San Francisco, California.
Of course, there were long distance operators or information operators who could look up numbers back in the day but it would probably have meant that he would have had to know the city where she was.
And if he was in Iowa in or near Humboldt, there could have been any number of his children whom he could have contacted, without having to resort to the long-distance call procedures for the ones in California.
Perhaps he read her name in the paper or something and decided to track her down.
Hanna was among the youngest ones in the family. She and the other youngsters would have suffered the most grievous loss when their parents' marriage broke up and would probably have had the more emotional reaction to it.

Mathais Andersen Strand married Anna Larsdatter Oct 30, 1862
He was 60 years old and she was 46. His father was named Anders Olsen and her father was named Lars Hemmingsen?
This was 14 years after Mikal Mathiasen Strand was born.

Unusually young? who? young for what?
Have to just guess what you mean.... An Anna Larsdtr married in 1862 when she was 46 yrs old. No, that is not unusually young. It also means that she was born about 1816.
So 14 yrs earlier a Mikal Mathiasen Strand was born. That would be about 1848. Anna Larsdtr would be about 32 yrs old in 1848. No, that is not unusually young.
An Erland Hagerup born in 1857 when Anna Larsdtr would be about 41 yrs old. No, that is not unusually young.
If I were you I'd spend more time researching whether or not these are all the same Anna Larsdatter. That is/was a very very common name. Both of the children mentioned were born years before the marriage record shown.

I am legally blind, so I first read it that he was married at 14. I usually have someone else read these posts to me, but sometimes there is no one around. Sorry.

Lars Hemmingson is not that common a name in the north of Norway. Here are three in the 1801 census and all are possibly aged right to father of someone born in the mid 18teens:
Lars Hemmingsen (b. 1792*) (male) Domicile: Alstahoug: Mevigen H: 1801-02-01 Pos./Status: Deres børn Ugivt Role: Source: 1801 census for 1820P Alstahaug
Lars Hemmingssen (b. 1775*) (male) Domicile: Medfiord: Laugvold H: 1801-02-01 Pos./Status: Selvfosterkarl Ugivt Lever af fiskerie Role: Source: 1801 census for 1929P Mefjord
Lars Hemmingsen (b. 1780*) (male) Domicile: Buxnæs: Stene H: 1801-02-01 Pos./Status: Tjenestedreng Ugivt Role: Source: 1801 census for 1860P Buksnes
And there is this one who died in 1843 in Tranoy: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NW27-3ZK
Actual record of the death #4 1844: SATØ, Tranøy sokneprestkontor, I/Ia/Iaa/L0005kirke: Ministerialbok nr. 5, 1829-1844, s. 282 Brukslenke for sidevisning: https://media.digitalarkivet.no/kb20070605620453
No age is given for him, a poor man (receiving assistance) living on Vigen.

Thanks to all of you for working so hard and piecing the puzzle together, re-thinking and coming up with a better result. I also greatly appreciate the summary - very helpful to someone who has been trying to hang on to the fast-moving, unraveling history of my mysterious great grandfather. |

Hi, this is extra information about Michal Mansbag Mathiesen. He was the brother of my great grand father, Erland Mathiesen #128512; They also had an elder sister Mathilde Eugenie Mathiesdatter. The name Strand was taken to refer to father Matthias Andersen who came from another part of Norway (Strand on western Coast near Førde) Mother of Mathilde, Michael and Erland, named Anna Larsdatter was from Torsken in Sonja. The family lived in Tranøya, south of Tromsø at the Island called Senja.
Matthias Andersen dies in 1865 when Erland was 8 years old. In the registration for 1965 census, Anna and Erland lives in Myklenes under Tranøy Church farm and Mikael/Mathilde Eugenie is working and living at two other farms in the area (Gjovik and Storjord) In 1866 Anna merries Ole Severin Iversen (who also lives at Storjord with Mathilde as a worker) Ole is much younger than Anna (Anna born 1814, Ole born 1839) In January 1868, Michael Mansbag emigrated to America. In may 1869, Mathilde Eugenie emigrates as well. She travels together with a couple of siblings from another farm , Vasvik, in the area Ole Sjursen an Bertha Sjursdatter from Tranø. In the registration they gave «Austin» as destination The ship was Damascus Leaving 05-06-1869 from Trondheim via Liverpool-Glasgow to New York
Anna and Ole Iversen (mother and new husband) emigrates 1883 and found as Anna Everson and Ole Everson in the concensus 1885 in Beaver Iowa together with Michael and Pernilles family.
Anna dies in U.S. in 1888
I am wondering where Mathilde settled , it is hard to find anything about her. She probably changed name and perhaps something happened.
If you have any idea of how to find more information I am happy to know
Best regards Anne Kristin |
