Found another matching brother on accident, I was searching for Henry totland in the 1900 Census, and I found him.

Name: Henry Totland
Home in 1900: Detroit, Becker, Minnesota
Age: 30
Estimated birth year: abt 1870
Birthplace: Norway
Relationship to head-of-house: Head
Spouse's name: Anna
Race: White
Immigration Year: 1888

and he has a neighbor a couple doors down this time it says:

Name: Louis Totland This is Ancestry.com's transcription, the handwriting looks identical to what Glen wrote and what looked to me as Larrie.
Home in 1900: Detroit, Becker, Minnesota
Age: 33
Estimated birth year: abt 1867
Birthplace: Norway
Relationship to head-of-house: Head
Spouse's name: Josephine
Race: White
Immigration Year: 1884

Information you found:
Lauritz Severin, chr 05 MAY 1867, Moster, Hordaland
Laurits Sev. Gustavsen Totland (17) emigrated on 18 Apr 1884.

Edit just found him in the 1930 Census too.

Name: Lewis S Totland
Home in 1930: Moose River, Marshall, Minnesota
Age: 62
Estimated birth year: abt 1868
Birthplace: Norway
Immigration year: 1884
Relation to Head of House: Head
Race: White

His middle initial matches Laurits' middle name.

As you can see another match for the birthdate and immigration year for what looks like another brother. Even though It would be nice to get more proof I think its almost undeniable that these are the same ones from Norway at the totland farm. I still would like ultimate proof that my Maren is their Maren. I will look into Gustav's death certificate. Thanks again :)

Take a look at this:

From the christening records in Moster i Finnås parish, Hordaland ,1875, page 12:

Lars Andreas, born 04 JUN 1875, parents Gustavus Larsen Totland & Pernille Torkelsdr

From the MHS Death Certificate Index:

TOTLAND, ANDREW L.
Date of Birth: 06/04/1876
Place of Birth: OUT OF STATE
Mother Maiden Name: UNKNOWN
certid# 1962-MN-006574
Date of Death: 03/04/1962
County of Death: HENNEPIN

Also born June 4th! :) Although 1 year wrong, this looks like a good possibility!
I think you'll need this certificate as well...

TOTLAND, HENRY JOHN
Date of Birth: na
Place of Birth: na
Mother Maiden Name: na
certid# 1943-MN-000397

Fyi, Helge Johan Gustavsen Totland is born 24 JUN 1869, in case you are able to locate Henry John's d.o.b.

Minnesota Naturalization Records Index, 1854-1957
about Henry John Totland

County: Becker
Reel: 2

I believe after 1906 Naturalization records were required to have detailed information on family, at the very least I think it would give us his birth date. Thanks again Jan Peter, its fitting together almost like a puzzle isn't it? I feel like Sherlock Holmes.

Edit: Always leave it to a WW1 draft card ;)

Good stuff!

According to the 1900 census, Hans Hansen Smilden and Maren Gustavsdr(?) Totland have been married for 3 years, and they have a daughter 'Gustie' (named after her maternal grandfather? ), born Aug. 1897.

So the question is; Did they marry in spring 1897? And possibly in Moraine township, Grand Forks, ND?

Have you tried to locate the marriage record for Hans & Maren?

My Aunt gave me some information for his wife Maren "Marie" Smilden. Her last name is supposedly Totland born feb. 22 (1879) in Norway. I was also told by my Aunt Sherry that they were first cousins. I noticed Totland is another farm in the same area!
1. I can not see that Hans & Maren are first cousins, if we have the right parents to Maren. That would mean that one of Hans' parents should have been a sibling to one of Maren's parents. Being named Jenssen, Hansdr, Larsen and Thorkelsdr, that can't be possible.

Hans Jensen, chr 08 Jan 1832, Askvoll, Sogn & Fjordane. Parents: Jens Lassesen & Ingeborg Hansdr
Halfri Hansdr, born 17 Apr 1836, Askvoll, Sogn & Fjordane. Parents: Hans Jensen & Trine Clausdr
Gustavus Larsen, born ca 1843, Avaldsnes, Rogaland. Parents: Lars Gulleiksen & Ingeborg Olsdr (?)
Pernille Torkelsdr, chr 20 Mar 1845, Finnas, Hordaland. Parents: Thorkild Johnsen & Mari Helgesdr

2. I could not find any farm named Totland in the Hyllestad (Smilden) area? The farms in question are actually quite far away from each other. Smilden is about 60 miles north of Bergen, while the Totland farm is about 60 miles south of Bergen.

I don't believe they are cousins, that is just something my aunt said. Infact Hans and Maren were both dead by the time she was born. I believe the info we have compiled so far is correct :), I don't know what I was thinking when I posted the farms were in the same area ;). Also I have been wanting to look for the marriage certificate but wasn't sure if they were married in North Dakota.

Grand Forks County Heritage Vol. I & II
Page 241 "Moraine"

Smeldon, Hans G.

"Hans G. Smeldon emigrated from Bergen, in Norway in, in 1890 when he was 17 years old, and for the following several years he worked in a lumber camp in Minnesota. In 1896 he came to Larimore and homesteaded in Section 2 of Moraine township. He married Maren Totland and they built a good two story house. this house now belongs to Ole and Manghild Stangeland and has been set back in the grove at the now Jorgen Hanssen place.

In 1913 the Smelden family moved to the Eastland farm which he had bought. He owned four quarters and rented a fifth quarter. Samuel Radcliffe had the Smelden's homestead which he sold to Walter Olson in 1914 or 1915. The Smeldens did not stay long at the present Clifford Eastland farm, but bought a farm in Hegton Township. The farm has remained in the family and his sons, Tom and Henry, still live there.

The members of the Smelden family are: Gustia, Hans, Hanna, Thomas, Inga, Tina, Henry, Marie - and they are all living. Joseph passed away in 1951 and Ingvald passed away in 1962. Mrs. Hans Smelden died November 7, 1948 and Mr. Hans Smelden died December 7, 1928."

The person who scanned the book for me said the information is family submitted and it was submitted in 1976. This explains why there are some discrepancies in the information. Also we know there names were Smilden not Smelden except for Hans' son Hans who changed his to Smelden. I bet it is one of his descendants that submitted the information. What is interesting is that Glen mentioned that "Tom" Totland worked as a lumberman too to bring over his brothers and sisters. Wonder if that also took place in Minnesota.

I have been in contact with Henry Totland's Great Granddaughter. She has done a lot of research and confirmed with me that Gustavus is the correct ancestor. She has even been to Norway, and met descendants of Gustavus that stayed there. She also told me that the immigration record for Maren "Maren Størnisdtr Totland" is a transcription error and she is the correct one! She even has a copy of a painting done of Gustavus and his boat!

Now to start pushing the line back.

Thorkild Jonsen and Mari Helgesdatter's marriage record.

Here they are in the digitized parish records. Couple 33

Can anyone Help me read what it says about their parents?

Then this Ancestral File For Gustavus Larsen. I know all of it would need to be verified but this is potentially a lot of information!

The Ancestral file has already proven useful! I used it to help me find the digitized parish record for Lars Gulleiksen and Ingeborg Olesdatter. Couple 26

According to the ancestral file the father should read Gulleik Bryngjelson for lars gulleiksen, and Ola lukasson as the father for Ingeborg Olesdatter. Is this correct I am having trouble reading their names.

Great stuff!

Torchel Johnsen, father looks like John Torchelsen.

Here is Torchel Johnsen on the Wiige farm, son of John Torchelsen & Borni Engelsdtr according to census-1801.

Mari Helgesdatter is born on Vestvig, and her father looks like Helgje Eivindsen

Here is Helgie Evendsen & wife Anna Larsdtr on the Vestvig farm in census-1801. Mari is probably born later the same year, because she is 26 at the marriage.
Gunder Gundersen (3) would be her half-brother (son of Anna Larsdr).

I have just finished reading all the information on Smilden (Smeldon) and Totland. I am the great-granddaughter of Henry (Helge Johan) that is mentioned in the post above. I did extensive work about 6 to 8 years ago and am excited to be in contact with the extended family.

My three trips to Norway have been very rewarding; wonderful family, wonderful country, beautiful pictures by the hundreds!.

Inga Smelden was my Mother. Maren and Hans were her parents. I met Ingvold and his family in Grand Forks when I was about nine years old. We stayed with them one night while on vacation. Ingvold died of a heart attack when he was in his fifties.
Hannah's son, Albert Swanson, lives in Larimore and would know more than anyone else about the family history. He knows a Totland descendent that lives in or near Detroit Lakes, Minnesota that did a great deal of research on Maren and her forbears. Albert's son, Brad lives on the Smelden farmstead that is located 3.5 miles North-East of Larimore.

Hello thanks for the information, would you happen to have any pictures of Inga, Ingvold or their parents Hans and Maren. I only have so much and would love to know what these people looked like I currently only have a few photos of Ingvold. If somehow you could scan them (if you had any) and then email me from this forum that would be great.

Thanks!

Above you mention the 1910 census. The Iver in Fertile would have been Iver Andersen Smilden. His mother's father was Iver or Ivar Sjursen Birkeland.
