A bit too early to go deep into his heritage, but this could be his mother:

Karen Chirstina Abrahamsdatter
Christening: 10 Mar 1797, Kristiansund, Møre og Romsdal, Norway
Birth: 05 Mar 1797
Parents: Abraham Ericsen & Ingebor Olsdotter

How exciting! Yes it is too early as the search of the parish records is very very important, that jkmarler has been doing. Still, your post sent chllls up my spine, Jan Peter!

On Dis-Norge is a discussion of this family: www.disnorge.no/slektsforum/viewtopic.php....

I can NOT get the site to open for me (I think it's my computer) so I am unsure if it's the same family. Google search shows this:

"Foreldre matros Ole Olsen Hammer og kona Karen Chirstina Abrahamsdatter. Folketellingen 1801 Tr.heim: Losjerende i "Munch Hou Veiten"

So if this is the same Ole Hammer, then he was a matros - that is a job title that has to do with the sea, yes?

I can't locate any of these 3 (Carl Johan or parents Ole Hammer/Karen Kristine Abrahamsdr) in census-1865.
I'm also wondering about the lastname Hammer. Not a normal name for a labourer in those days.

One of the Godparents at the christening of Carl Johan is Ingeborg Martha Hammer. Could she be a sister of Ole Hammer?

I found this:
Frederich Christian Melbye & Ingeborg Martha Olsdr Hammer
Marriage: 17 Oct 1839, Kristiansund, Møre Og Romsdal, Norway

Thus; Ole Hammer could be Ole Olsen Hammer.

Found a widow Karen Abrahamsdr (62) in Bud, Møre og Romsdal. This is 50 km south of Kristiansund.
Hard to tell if she could be the right one.

Born about 1803, she is the right age, anyway, to have children in the 1830s.

Thank you for all this!!

Thanks! Yes it's about a descendant of Fredrik Christina Melbye gift (married) 17.10.1839 (17 October) in Kristiansund med (with) Ingeborg Martha Olsdatter Hammer! And to think you had just found that marriage!.

And also you had just found that birth date for Ingeborg Martha (Inger) born 19. februar 1819 in Kristiansund!

Thus we know that Carl Johan's father Ole Olsen Hammer was a sailor. Interesting...

The reference to census 1801 for Trondheim is for the Melbye family.
Lars Melbye was Ingeborg Martha Olsdr Hammer's father-in-law.

Yes I noticed the 1801 Folketellingen (Census) would be too early for Ole Olsen Hammer and wife. So glad you posted that DIS-Norge link (which worked fine for me as you can see).

Karen Abrahamsdr (62) is born ab. 1804. Thus not a very likely candidate since she would have been only 15 yrs old when their first child Inger Martha was born.

Seems like Carl Johan's parents are either dead or have emigrated by 1865. A wild shot, but could they have emigrated with their son to New York???

Here is their marriage, also in Kristiansund from Norway Marriages at familysearch:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N75B-W8Q

No ages given for the folks.

Here is baptism daughter Ingebor Marthe, #12:
Source information: Møre og Romsdal county, Kristiansund in Kvernes, Parish register (official) nr. 572A04 (1784-1819), Birth and baptism records 1819, page 263.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=2283&idx_id=2283&uid=ny&idx_side=-252

Her mother's name is missing...

Another issue is the destruction of the parish registers of Kristiansund. According to film notes in FHL catalog Kristiansund's dated 1842-1897 were destroyed. Some fragments must exist, however.

I have been searching Hammer in New York while you wrote that....Yes there are people with surname Hammer there...

Karen Abrahamsdatter in Bud seemed right age for Charles mother but yes, she is too young, when I have now seen the whole wonderful list of siblings you developed.

It is so good to have all those records from jkmarler from the confirmations!!!! Only in that way can we tell, of the possible candidates, which one or two are best, and then perhaps we might be able to develop the connection. Also jkmarler is keeping an eye out for updates to all those "finds" along the way.

You guys are MARVELOUS!

Tusen takk for hjelpen!
