This would appear to be the same family in the 1875 Census. Notice the name changes, but Carl Knudson stays the same. Also Karen or Caren birth year is ten years off.

This may be Elen f. Hammer's baptismal #14 on girl's page:

Source information: Møre og Romsdal county, Kristiansund in Kristiansund, Parish register (official) nr. 572A05 (1819-1832), Birth and baptism records 1824, page 68-69.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=16102&idx_id=16102&uid=ny&idx_side=-37

A few ripples on parents' names etc. But her name is Elen Carolina....

Thanks! This looks absolutely normal to me, to have those discrepancies. Notice the job titles of Styrmand, Matros, and Sømand.

From the beginning I guessed maybe Charles Wilson was born into a family just like this (seamen).

Yes, it's them. Karen Christina Abrahamsdtr. son-in-law is a sailor, and two of her grand-sons are seamen. This was a maritime family...

Another great find!

Yes, this looks like Elen Carolina. She is Elen in that first census (1865) and Caroline in the second (1875).

If I read right, the father here is a søfarer - sailor. Hard to decipher his name, but I can tell enough that it is Ole Olsen Hammer.

I can't read the place mentioned after the parents names (paa/of/from ..... somewhere).

No way could I read this at all if I didn't already know the names, and you telling me where to look.

lyndal 40, it's good to have that baptism here with us - at this point it's been a long time since we've seen it.

About the 1884 immigration of Iver Knudson, wife Gjertine and daughter Nikoline - the neighbors of Karen Christine Abrahamsdtr in 1875:
Interesting, jkmarler. I am picturing Karen reading the letters of Charles aloud to them. Of course, I know that's just fantasy! They are going to Chicago, so that's another site to search for any children of Karen who may have immigrated. It's a long shot, but why not try it...

I've been thinking about Charles Wilson being a lighterman. Some time I could picture him on a dock, going up and down a gangplank, to load and unload a large ship docked there. But a lighter is a small, flat-bottomed boat. I think lightermen would get in the lighter and go out into the harbor, where a large ship is moored, away from the dock. From the lighter they load and unload the ship. Just thinking he may be in a boat more of the time than I previously pictured. In any event, whether that's right or no, seamen jobs were also in his records (Brooklyn City Directories on the Skippy Wilson website).

There are 3 boys in the 1875 Carl Knudsen family. This may be the younger one in the 1900 census:

The same family in 1910 but Ole's birthyear has changed a bit:
