I am not having much luck locating the later life of Carl Anthonius Olesen born in Kongsberg and Carl Johan Olsen married in Eiker - it's a learning curve for me!

Takk!!

So then this Carl Johan Olsen can NOT be Charles Wilson of Brooklyn, New York.
At least he has been ruled out - which is important.

Thank you agan!

Here is Carl Anthonius Olsen's confirmation #7:

Source information: Buskerud county, Kongsberg, Parish register (official) nr. 9 (1839-1858), Confirmation records 1850, page 378-379.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=1098&idx_id=1098&uid=ny&idx_side=-229

So he survived childhood!

The Carl Johan mentioned page 2 here was born in More og Romsdal not Kongsberg as this fellow.

I am so glad to see Carl Anthonius alive and well and getting confirmed! I appreciate that a lot. : D

About your second post: You are saying the Carl Johan Olsen who married Birthe Marie Larsdr in Eker is a DIFFERNT man from the one below.
Do I correctly understand your meaning? You are keeping us on track, making sure the Carls are "sorted out."

I am loving all this help - and absolutely I could never have done this alone.

===============================================
Here's that comment, the one I want to be sure I understand right, and the Carl Johan who might have died, because of the cross by his baptismal record:

"The Carl Johan mentioned page 2 was born in More og Romsdal..." HE IS:

Name: Carl Johan Olsen
Gender: Male
Baptism/Christening Date: 23 Sep 1834
Baptism/Christening Place: KRISTIANSUND, MORE OG ROMSDAL, NORWAY
Birth Date: 19 Jun 1834
Father's Name: Ole Hammer
Mother's Name: Karen Kirstine Abrahamsdr
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C42203-1
System Origin: Norway-ODM
Source Film Number: 124839
Here is the birth baptism of the Carl Johan Olsen you found:
Source information: Mĝre og Romsdal county, Kristiansund, Parish register (official) nr. 572A06 (1832-1842), Birth and baptism records 1834, page 16.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=16106&idx_id=16106&uid=ny&idx_side=-16

Unfortunately, there is a small cross by the entry which is usually put on the records of a person who didn't survive.
=======================================================================================

I wish/hope he didn't die as I love his name "Carl Johan." The 19 June not the 09 June is a discrepancy, of course...

Again thanks!

I do have trouble with the records so it's a big help that you posted that. Thank you!

"Our" Charles Wilson/Olsen worked on boats and on the shore, loading and unloading boats. I suppose he could have a father who is a silver miner - but I would not expect it. I expected a family living along the ocean coast or in a port town.

I'm not being much help...I am hoping the man I am helping will come soon to the forum! However, it may well be that he also does not know some of the information that might help. Also the job of posting the photo (back of the photo) needs to be done, and so on...

I have still tried searching in different ways in the various search engines but nothing knew to report.

To all of you: your continued interest and patience is much appreciated!

Karl Johan was the name of the King of Norway/Sweden from 1818-1844. He was of French origin, and could not speak the Scandinavian languages. So the Royal household in Stockholm had to speak French. There is a lot of Carl Johan's born in Norway in that period, and it's easy to understand whom they're named after...

Karl III Johan
(Jean Baptiste Bernadotte, 1763 - 1844)

I did not know that. That is very interesting!

In a funny way, this fact somehow draws the family in America closer to Norway, even though we have not yet found the Norwegian family - as though a glimmer of Norwegian culture shines on in the life of "Charles Wilson of Brooklyn New York."

When an ancestor is lost - beyond our reach no matter how we (and others) try - then we can at least fill in an idea of the place, the time, the culture of that person. This fits into that framework very well.

Big smile. Thank you!
