I contacted Lars E. Øyane, a Luster County Historian who put up the Worth County, Iowa baptism database at Digitalarkivet. Below is his fantastic reply!
--- "I suspect Anna Halvorsdotter to be born in Skrautvaal, Nord-Aurdal County in Valdres, Norway on Apr. 3, 1856, a twin, daughter of Halvor Haldorson and Marit Olsdotter, then servants at the Gigstad farm. The 1865 census shows the family as crofters at the Brenden croft under the Dokken farm in Nord-Aurdal."
I hope this helps...
Sincerely yours,
Lars E. Oyane ---

Wow! I wondered about this family.. I, also, found them on the Digitalarkivet site. Birthdate for Anne is close. Death record says Apr. 2 of 1853 instead of Apr 3 of 1856. And the census saying immigration was 1865, probably within the realm of possibility. Now, I just have to verify that's the right family! The only obit I found for Anne's death in 1905 from Lake Mills, Iowa is very non-specific. No mention of parents, siblings, etc. Quite disappointed in that- usually obits are a good source. Thanks again! Vicky |

You mentioned how great newspaper obits are--indeed!
The Minnesota Historical Society has a collection of microfilmed newspapers which they do loan through ILL. McLeod county has at least 2 papers covering the dates the Haldersons / Halversons were there + 1905. The Glencoe papers were especially "chatty"
Likewise there are Iowa newspapers in Worth county which have been microfilmed to cover at least 1905. Check them out in the U.S. Newspaper Directory at the Chronicling America website.
I'm not familiar with all the online newspaper sites but perhaps some of these titles are covered at one or another? |

Looks like Nils was already in Minnesota by 1870. He is listed along with some of the famly in the 1870 US Census dated 5? July 1870. Along with Nils is wife Rachel age 40, Holderson (probably Holder) age 12, son Jacob age 8 born in Wisconsin, A Karine age 5/12 born in Minnesota.
1870 United States Federal Census Name: Niles Holderson Age in 1870: 36 Birth Year: abt 1834 Birthplace: Norway Home in 1870: Bergen, Mcleod, Minnesota Race: White Gender: Male Post Office: Rocky Run Value of real estate: Household Members: Name Age Niles Holderson 36 |

On that same page in the July 1870 US Census is Holder Holderson and family, consisting of wife Mali age 36, Ann? age 10, Bidine age 7, Mary age 4, and Holder age 1. All born in Norway. However the ages for Holder and wife Mali do not match with the ages of Halvor and Marit.
1870 United States Federal Census Name: Holder Holderson Age in 1870: 39 Birth Year: abt 1831 Birthplace: Norway Home in 1870: Bergen, Mcleod, Minnesota Race: White Gender: Male Post Office: Rocky Run Value of real estate: Household Members: Name Age Holder Holderson 39 |
