At the usgenweb site for Webster county, Iowa (where Deer Creek is) they have transcriptions for the early marriages 1859-1890.

In the 1870 census there were some Halvorson/ Halverson families.

At findagrave there is a Halvar Halverson memorial b. 1817 d. 1892 in Webster county, although his wife appears to have been a woman named Siri, she is 16 years younger than he which brings up the possibility that she was a second wife....

I am set to go to Silver Lake Church on Monday to find records for Gulbrand Sorbo and Anne Halverson. I'm hoping some sponsor names will help tie Anne to a family. I, also, ordered the marriage record of a Julia (Guri) who married in 1880 in McLeod county, MN. It perhaps was foolish to do so,
but it may have a clue.

Vicky, you might also want to check the funeral of Halvor Halvorson in 1867...

Went to Silver Lake. Found all the 11 children of Gulbrand and Anne Sorbu, but no marriage record. No clues on the Halversen side as it appears most of the sponsor names are from the Sorbo side. I also plan to check Freeborn county as the 1895 census shows them there. Perhaps I will find a news article or something with a clue. I found the Parish record of emigration for Gulbrand's family in the Digitalarkivet, but I can't find the ship record showing destination, etc. I found the record in Oppland, Vang parish record. Gulbrand's parents were Ole Gulbrandson Opdal (used Sorbu in U.S.) and Gunvor
Knutsdatter Lunde. The 8 children are all listed as coming over with them, Gulbrand being the oldest at 20.This was in 1862. Is that too early to find a ship record?
Also, on Anne. I am curious about an Anne in Telemark, Hjartdal. Listed with a Baptismal date of Apr. 2, 1854 which is close to her death record birth date of Apr. 2, 1853. Her parents are Halvor Pedersen and Marit Olsdatter. Any chance of finding out when these people may have come over (if, of course they did).?
Thanks- Vicky K.

Freeborn County Historical Society in Albert Lea has a really nice collection of newspapers, most of which are indexed, which should help you look, as well as other sources.

Emigrantlists from Hjartdal can be found here and here, but I cant find this family in those lists...

It is believed that nearly 2000 people from Hjartdal emigrated to America.
The first one left in 1838, and a big number left the next year. They settled in Muskego outside Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Later settlements headed west and north in Wisconsin, and continued to Minnesota and Dakota Territory.
The Muskego Settlement, which was in the town of Norway, Racine County, Wisconsin, was one of the first Norwegian-American settlements.

I would guess they left Bergen on a Bark/ship in April 1862, arriving Quebec in June 1862.

Thanks, Jan, for the additional research. Anne's family has definitely been tough to nail down. I'll look over the links you sent carefully. Hopefully, I'll go to Freeborn County on Monday to check newspapers, etc.
Thanks for all you do.

I just looked at the first link for Emigrants from Hjartdal and found under Hagen- Gunhild, Hans Nerison, and Aslaug. Hans was my great great grandfather. This is on my Mom's side instead of Dad's Sorbo/Halvorsen side!
Thanks.

Had some difficulty finding Gilbert Gjester the son in the 1910 census. At HeritageQuest his last name is indexed as "Chester". He is employed as a shipping clerk at the Biscuit co. He is boarding in a household headed by a Mary Berg age 42 b. Norway, who is widowed has had 5 children and 5 living. Her oldest 2 children are also employed at the biscuity co. All the children born in North Dakota.

At genealogybank.com in the Grand Forks Herald, there is an obituary of sorts for a person whose last name is "Chester" on 17 Feb 1916, stating he is being laid to rest today and his parents are unaware. No other details given. There is no one with the last name "Chester" buried at Memorial Park Cem in GF (as of 1995)--could be some other cemetery entirely--the snippet is mostly just the headline. There is no Gjester mentions in 1916

The North Dakota Public Death Index finds no entries of the last name Chester in 1916 but Gilbert Gjester is listed.

The full text of his obit or death notice from the Grand Forks daily Herald,
Thursday 17 Feb 1916, pg 8:

"Chester to be Laid Away Today; Parents Unaware of His End
The funeral of Gilbert Chester, 414 North Sixth street, whose death occured last Sunday, will be held from Ashley's undertaking parlors this morning at 10 o'clock.

Rev. F. Jorgenson of this city will have charge of the services and interment will be at Memorial Park cemetery.

The deceased's mother and father, who live in Cloverly, Sask., are believed to be still in ignorance of their son's death.

A telegram has been sent telling them of the sad news, but as the nearest telegraph station is located at Gull Lake, Sask., 42 miles distant, it is feared that they have not yet heard of his demise.

Gull Lake is also the nearest point from Cloverly to be touched by a railroad. The heavy snows are believed to have considerably hampered the stage service between Gull Lake and Cloverly, making communication by that method very slow.

Besides the widow, other relatives who will attend the last rites for their cousin today are Mrs. Mary Nelson, Henry Odegard and Albert Odegard, all of Grand Forks."

There are a couple of possibles in Grand Forks named Odegard, but no household in which there is an Albert (exactly), and a Henry (exactly) and a Mary (exactly), so I'm not sure if any of these are or are not the correct ones, or if Henry is the same person as Harry. Henry Martinius Odegard's death record says his mother's maiden name is Halvorson.

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VPC6-VT7

Odds & ends from the Grand Forks paper, various dates:
2 Jan 1909 Gilbert Jester, Henry Odegard, Albert Odegard are each listed as attending a New Year's party put on by Arvid Hamelstrom at 1226 Dakota Ave. in Grand Forks

1 July 1911 Gilbert Jester and Henry Odegard on the list of team members of a local baseball team called "Bydal and Bydal"

24 Apr 1912 Miss Blanche Baxter and Henry M. Odegard were married this afternoon at her parents' home 1123 International Ave by Dr. S.F. Halfyard in front of unnamed family and friends.

26 Jan 1916 In a report on the assault trial of Ed Campbell against Stefan Hrosko which resulted in Hrosko's death, Henry Odegard is mentioned several times as inflicting blows on Hrosko who was reported to have struck Henry Odegard's baby on the face. Henry Odegard and Blanche Baxter stood up at Ed Campbell's wedding and apparently Henry and Ed were neighbors as well. Not sure how the case ended.

1919 Henry Odegard Co is mentioned in City Commission meetings as a grocery vendor who was going to be paid.

1910 Henry Adegard age 19 rooming in Grand Forks:

Perhaps the connection is through their wives? Gilbert Gjester married Anna Kortness and Albert Odegard married Ada or Ida Kortness per this lightly documented database:
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:2885047&id=I16792

According to the database Anne Kortness was married to Philip Gravelle. Here is their marriage record in MOMS:
POLK Q/502 09/02/1916 GRAVELLE, PHILLIP CHESTER, ANNIE

These are the Kortness marriages in the Grand Forks county marriage license database:
30 Apr 1905 Alice Kortnes James S Devine 4 18 9-098
26 Nov 1910 Annie Kortnes Gilbert Gjester 5 39 12-456
4 Oct 1913 Ida Kortness Albert Odegard 6 19 14-127
16 Jan 1915 Emma Washinsky Alfred Kortness 6 32 14-459
26 Oct 1918 Olga Kortnes Henry Hanson 7 19 16-110
23 Apr 1921 Rose Kortness John Lowe 7 45 17-150

In the Grand Forks Evening News, 21 July 1910 there was a legal notice in the matter of Ever Halvorson's estate. These are the respondents listed:
Siri Pederson nee Christianson,
Marit Kortness
Ever Everson
Peder Everson
Albert Everson
Benny Everson
Ole Glaserud / Ginserud

This may be the Ever Halvorson who died in 1910, listed in the 1880 census with an Ever Everson and Mary Everson and a John Everson:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MCVQ-Z5B

Mary & Peter Kortness in the 1920 census:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MC8B-KJ1

Mary Kortness's death record in Washington lists her father's name as Everson:

Here is a family in which there is both an Albert and an Henry Odegard in Traill county, North Dakota in 1900:

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M9V5-KYH

Louis M Odegard Head M 39 Norway
Mary Odegard Wife F 34 Norway
Henry Odegard Son M 10 North Dakota
Albert Odegard Son M 8 North Dakota
Elvin Odegard Son M 4 North Dakota
Laura Odegard Daughter F 2 North Dakota
Marit Olson Mother-in-law F 80 Norway

A possible marriage for the parents of Albert and Henry from Traill county, N.D.:
Odegard, Louis M. Gystad, Marie H. 24 Dec 1888 B. 68

Not a lot of farms named Gystad in Norway some for certain in Ullensaker.

Louis Odegard apparently on his own, divorced in the 1930 census:

Alvin Julius Odegard is buried in Old Addition Block 521 Lot 1, Grave 4 in Memorial Park cemetery in Grand Forks. Interestingly a Mrs. Marie Nelson is buried in this same plot only Grave 6. She died the 25 June 1955 and is buried 29 June 1955.

Here is Marie Nelson's entry in the North Dakota Public Death Index:
