If a family departed Sweden in 1853 what ports would they probably depart from? I am looking for a Charles, age 33, and Mary, age 28, Johnson and at least one son, John, age 5. These are the American names for the family. I was told it was Johanson (not sure of spelling) in Sweden. Thanks.

Gothenburg had the busiest harbor and many ships departed from there to America, but it could be any other port. Do you know where in Sweden they were living?

I do not know where they lived in Sweden. The son, John, married in Iowa in 1875 and is my husband,s great grandfather. The 1905 or 1910 Iowa census states that John came to US in 1853. He was born in 1848. Charles & Mary, who is said to be great grandfather John's parents, were born in 1820 and 1825 in Sweden, are in the 1880 Iowa census, Plymouth County. It showed that they had three chilldren still living at home and they had been born in Illinois. I am hoping to find them on a passengers list but I'm not finding many list that have ships departing from Sweden.
