Using the 1875 census I have traced my GG grandfather Andreas Hanssen to the Braaten under Algrim farm. This farm is listed in Listen over gårder er hentet fra "Norske Gaardnavne". -as #111 and #112 Algrem sogn Ullensaker - herred Ullensaker - and amt Akershus. There are other farm names nearby with Algrim or Algrem as part of their name. Andreas changed his name to Algrim upon arrival in the US in 1880. I am trying to locate the farm first of all. I don't know if anyone nearby that could take digital photographs the area and or buildings and send them to me. That is asking a lot.

Information in his obituary says Andreas, his parents, 4 brothers and a sister came over in 1880 and I'm trying to locate ship information as well. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Hi,
I did not find any farm by the name of Algrim in the Ullensaker area today. Maybe the spelling has changed....?
The best way to locate the farm would be to post an inquiry in this forum: Digitalarkivet
Many people from the Ullensaker district are frequently visiting that forum, and I'm sure someone will try to assist you. Be sure to include this link in your inquiry, plus other info you may have...
A nearby farm (based on the landnumbers), looks to be one called "Stokstad". The farm Stokkstad exists in Ullensaker today, and must be the same farm. You should mention that in the forum...

Where did Andreas Hanssen settle in the US?
I found one "Andreas Hans.", emigrating from Kristiania to to Chicago in 1880; click here
He went by the ship "Hero" on June 11th, 1880. He is married, but it looks like he went alone... Could not find anyone called Andreas Algrim.

Hi In the Matrikkelutkastet av 1950 (1950 farms)Akershus, Ullensaker herad, there is a Nordre and Søndre Algrim listed. Some of the owners listed used the last name Algarheim. There is a place called Algarheim today, southwest of the Oslo Guardmoen airport. I found 63 Algarheim's listed in the Telefonkatalogen some living in Algarheim. You could try writing. I also found a few e-mail address for Algarheim's at Infospace.
Somewhere I have a link to pictures of farms in Norway. I'll see if I can find it and if Algarheim is listed.

Here is the 1875 census:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=9&filnamn=f70235&gardpostnr=485&personpostnr=3274&merk=3274#ovre

There are the five farms in Akerhus in the 1865 census with Algarheim in the name but I could not make the link work. Algarheim nordre and Algarheim søndre, total of 37 people.

The Andreas that Jan Peter found seems to be the same one as the 1875 census, signing out on June 11, 1880. From information on this site, the agent listed in the link is W. Pay, (William Pay), an agent for the Anchor Line. The Anchor line operated from Norway to Hull, England, train to Glascow, Scotland and then across the sea to New York.

Andreas Hansen, age 47, steerage, arrived at the Port of New York on June 28, 1880 from Glascow, Scotland aboard the steamship Devonia destination U.S. He would have been processed for immigration at Castle Garden and then by train to Chicago.

Thanks so much for this information. I had not visited this site since 2003 so your information is new to me. Can you tell me where I can find the ship's passenger list for this voyage?

The US National Archives would have 1880 US passenger manifests. You might also find microfilm copies of those manifests in the collection of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. In both of those repositories you'd look for the records by searching for the arrival location - New York (specifically Castle Garden within NY records).

Also, if you use a search engine and look for 'Castle Garden'' you can find an online database which can be searched.

His mother was Berthe Andersdatter and the father was Hans Sørensen.

I thank you. I am still trying to locate exactly where this family lived using the 1865 and 1875 censuses. Is there any way I can find that out?
