I am looking for my husband's family, but don't know where to go from the information that I have. I know his great grandfather was Erling Johaan Tjaaland (b 13 Dec 1896) and he married Elise Kristine Karlsen (b 1892). I know they were both born in Stavanger and married April 25, 1918. I was able to find the immigration records where they came to America with their children (my husband's grandmother and her brother).
From their marriage records, Erling's father was Johan Tjaaland and Elise's father was Zakarias Karlsen.
I also know that he had something to do with fish packaging and opened several factories there to do that.
Can anyone help me go any farther back from this? Thank you! |

I should say Erling was the one who opened the factories. That is my understanding anyway.
I was told about a museum in Stavanger that houses a lot of their family heritage, but I don't know any more about that. |

Erling, his parents and grandmother in 1900 census. His father had a rubber factory and a canning factory. They were living in this house in 1900.
Erlings baptismal record is #4 - father tinsmithmaster Johan Arnt Tjaaland and mother Margrete Kristiane Egenæs. (After norwegian naming practice he would have been Erling Johansen, Tjaaland)
Erlings parents were married Dec 16 1894, see record #59.
The baptismal record for Johan Arnt Tjaaland is #27. His parents were Ole Jespersen and Gurina Kristiansdatter, Tjaaland. His parents, grandparents and siblings in 1865.
The baptismal record for Margrete Kristiane Egenæs is #31 - she was actually baptized Kristiane Margrete. Her parents were sea captain Eilert Christian Egenæs and Helene Elisabeth Block.
Widower Eilert (Christian) Andersen, Egenæs and Helene Elisabeth Block were married Oct 1 1871, see #47. Eilert Christian Andersens father was Anders Andersen, Egenæs. Helene Elisabeth Block was born in East Prussia and her father was cooper Jacob Block.

- from the info in church records and censuses I understand that it was Erlings father Johan Arnt Tjaaland who "had something to do with fish packaging". This is my understanding from what I have seen in writing:
He was a tinsmith, worked in a factory soldering the lids on cans for smoked sardins, was in Germany running a canning factory, later he became the owner of a canning factory in Norway, he participated in a meeting with the prime minister to discuss export of canned fish in 1918.
Erling was an office manager when he emigrated in 1920, hoping for improved income in US, see here.
Could this be his wife and three children who followed in 1923?

Ah, yes, I remember now that it was Johan, not Erling who owned the factories.
Also, I do not believe that is Erling's family. Is it possible that he returned to Norway and then back to the US with his family? I know his children weren't born until after 1920. His wife and children didn't come to the US until 1929. |

Johan and Elsa Christine are his children. Elsa was born in 1923. I do not know when Johan was born, but I know he was older than Elsa. |

The baptismal record for Else Kristine is #100.
The baptismal record for Johan is #68. Erling was then the owner of a canning factory.
The family were living in Hafrsfjordgaten 7 when the children was born.
Since Erling had left for US in 1920, he must have returned to father Else Kristine. He left the 2nd time in 1927.

I read the Norwegian naming practices and have a better understanding. However, could you explain the changes of the spellings? Above, Karl became Carl, Krist became Christ and Lina became Lena. |
