I have a copy of the KONTRAKT under which my g-grandfather and his family sailed from Christiansand to the U.S. aboard the Cunard Line's SS Ivernia, apparently departing Christiansand Dec. 5, 1902. The total fare for five persons -- my g-grandparents and three children, ages 7, 4, and 9 months -- is listed as 704.5 kroner. I assume from what I can find out about fares at the time that this would be for steerage. Can anyone advise me as to what this total fare would be in either current kroner or current U.S. dollars? Also, any other information or suggestions as to how I might learn more about the sailing time of this vessel, its specific destination, and its arrival would be very helpful. If I understand the contract correctly, they left Christiansand on 5 December, travelling first to Hull, then to Liverpool, and then on to the U.S. -- either Boston or New York, I assume. I have found an SS Ivernia arrival in New York on 11 Jan., 1903, but the implied travel time seems overly long given what I understand were usually 6 or 7 day transatlantic voyage times of the era. Thank you for any help, and if there is any interest in my further research on the family, I'm happy to share what I know. My g-grandfather was Aslak Olsen Raamundalen on the ticket. His wife was Margit and their children Olaf, Sigrid, and Osmund. Aslak adopted the family name of Kallaak in the United States. His wife was known as Margit Overbo.

Q: What is 704.5 Kroner in 1905 worth in 2005?
A: http://www.norges-bank.no/stat/historiske_data/en/hms/c3.pdf (Table 14; Pg 93)
Using the table from the above website – CPI for Norway (1850=100)
CPI in 1905 = 110 (Using table 14)
CPI in 2003 = 6020.4 (Using table 14)

http://www.ssb.no/kpi_en/tab-01-en.html shows Norwegian CPI for 2004 & 2005
Calculating Norwegian Inflation Rate for the year 2004 & 2005 using the CPI from the above link:
2004 = .44
2005 = 1.6

Norwegian CPI in 2005 = 6143.6
http://minneapolisfed.org/Research/data/us/calc/hist1800.cfm
Formula to calculate change in price using the above website:
2005 Price = 1905 Price X (2005 CPI / 1905 CPI)
2005 Price = 704.5 X (6143.6 /110)
2005 Price = 704.5 X 55.85
2005 Price = 39346.33 Kroner
704.5 Kroner in 1905 would worth 39346.33 Kroner in 2005

Total fare in either current kroner would be 39346.33

It might be of interest to compare the fare to what a person would earn in those days. The figures below are for the year 1905

Annual wages, male servant rural: 234 kroner
Annual wages, female servant rural: 114 kroner
Annual wages, male servant town: 300 kroner
Annual wages, female servant town: 133 kroner

Aslak olea Raamundalen and family arrived at the Port of Boston on the SS Ivernia on December 19, 1902. Left Liverpool on December 9, 1902. He is listed as a carpenter, going to Fessender (?), ND to brother-in-law, Jorgen Bryngaleson.

Also traveling with them was Talleir Raamundalen, 25, schumaker, also going to ND. Hard to read.

There is information and a picture of the Ivernia on this site.

Sarfaraz, would you mind doing a similar current value for a 884 kroner cost of travel in 1880. Thanks, Sid Thompson

Hi,
I have information on my ancestors and when they arrived in New York from Bergen in 1850 aboard the Drafna as steerage passengers they paid 22 SPD per head. (at that time the six of them would have been classified as adults).
I have been told that at the time that would be about equivalent to US $12.60 per head.
