I'm on the verge.. Looking for Käri Olson (nee Gigstad), born Valders, Norway 20-Apr-1864. Came to America abt 1890, changed name to Clara. Married Gustav Olson (A Swede) abt 1900 Died 20-Nov-1934, Malmo, Aitkin Co, MN On the 1865 census I find Kari Knudsdatter, Age 2, on the Dokken farm (I believe is a subfarm of Gigstad) in Nord Aurdal, Oppland. I found Kari Knudsen leaving Oslo, Norway on 03-May-1889 on the Angelo Line heading for Manitowoc (Wisconsin).
Okay...what is the next step? How do I find her arrival in America? Also, the family legend is that Käri and Gust met on the boat to America.
Also...I have been told that the name Käri is not the same as Kari (without the umlauts)
Thanks in advance for any help.
Bob

Hi There aren't a lot of on line sources that have the arrival lists. The NARA , there is a link under "links to external sources" below, or the LDS could have the microfilms of the lists or an index that you can rent.
This Page shows the likely connecting ships and the ones with an arrow next to them are confirmed connects. Probably a lot of work but I don't know of any easy way.
Good Luck Carla |

In the 1930 census, MN, Aitkin, Malmo, ED 1-33, page 2B, Gustav, 62, Born Sweden, Farmer, Immigrated 1899. Clara, 65, Born Norway, emigrated 1889, naturalized 1896.
In the 1920 census, it shows that they immigrated in 1890, naturalized 1896.
Using the link Brining gave you, I recommend that you rent the New York Passenger Lists microfilm for May 1899 from a local Family History Center. If you don't find them there, try the Canadian lists, Philadelphia and Baltimore.
Also, Gustav (Gust) naturalizations records might indicate when he entered this country and at what port. These records will most likely be found on the County level. Good luck |

Just got the Naturalization papers...Wrong Gust Olson. I knew they were in Aitkin and found the census records, and that they moved there around 1900, but where they were before that I have no a clue. Maybe Wisconsin? So far have not found them on 1900 census, there are a LOT of Gus(t)(ta)(tav)(taf) Ol(e)(son)(sen)(sson)(ssen)s!!! |

Have you tried the Aitkin County Historical Society -http://www.aitkin.com/achs/. They seem to have a lot of research material. Maybe they have an 1895 county history book and your family might be mentioned in it. |
