I've been searching for any record of my ancestors: Helmar and Maggie (Marstend) Alstad, or Jens P. and Josephine (Hanson) Houg for months and I've hit a brick wall. Any help (or advice) would be greatly appreciated!

Please provide more information, like when they were born, where they were from, names of other family members and so on. It will increase the chance of getting help. From the Posting Guidelines for this forum:

If you are expecting people to help you with your research, add the necessary information, (like what you already know, such as names, dates, and other details that might help, where you have looked, and what exactly you are looking for)

Help us help you!

There is one Hilmar Kornelius Alstad departuring from Trondheim on April 12th., 1904.
He is born in 1884, and is not married.
According to Ellis Island, he looks to be going to cousin Herman Pedersen in Brooklyn, NY.

Sorry! I think my excitement at finding this site made me post too hastily! :-)

This is the information that I have - and it's not much: Helmar Alstad was born in Norway, 1869. He married Maggie Marstend, (born in Norway around 1871-72) and their first child, Ragna, was born in 1893 in South Dakota. They then moved to Minnesota around 1905-1910.

I have basically ZERO info about Jens P. Houg. I know that his wife, Josephine Magdalene Hanson, was born in Norway on 20 August 1849. I believe that her parents were Ole Hanson and Sophie Jacobsdatter Norvold from Sorum, Akershus, Norway. Josephine and Jens' children were all born in Minnesota, starting around 1876 or so.

This is all the info I have!

By the way, Jan, thanks for your info, but unfortunately the dates just don't add up. However, I really appreciate your help!

As ever, any help is greatly appreciated.

Did Jens and Josephine have children named Otto, Sofie M., Carl P., George O. and Martha? (listing in Rock Co. Minnesota 1880 US census)

FamilySearch indicates a Sophie M. Houg married in Rock Co. Minnesota in Sept. 1900 but is listed in the 1900 census there as "Sopha Houg" whose father is indicated as a "Jense Houg". That census shows several additional siblings (or perhaps name changes) -- Oliver, Arthur, and Laurits.

If this is the same family - then it should be noted that in the 1880 census Jens lists himself as Jens Peterson! He is listed as "Jense Houg" in the 1900 census, lists his year of immigration as 1868 and his birth as May 1840 in Norway.

There are a number of matches in the information - but also a number of differences.

Also, did Jens Houg die 1912 in Rock Co. MN?

Jens Houg is found in Allamakee Co. Iowa in the 1870 US census living as farm laborer in the household of Peter and Sofia Monsrud. Peter and Sofia have a 21 year old Norway born daughter then listed as "Lina". In 1860 Peter and Sofia are listed as Peter and Sophia Oleson.

Familysearch shows a younger brother of the "Lina Monsrud" above married in Allamakee Co. Iowa 1884 and on that record listed his mother as "Sofie J. Nordsvold", father as "Peter O. Monsrud". The brother married a Hjornevig girl -- probably a Hjornevik from Voss/Evanger area.

A candidate for Jens Jensen, Haug is #67, he was born May 1 1840 (not May 2) and his parents were Jens Petersen, Haug and Marthe Pedersdatter.

Einar -
That link takes us to a 1868 page of births and baptisms --
Buskerud fylke, Norderhov, Ministerialbok nr. 13 (1866-1874), Fødte og døpte 1868, side 47.
Record #67 on that page is for a Julius Bernhard...

But the births/baptism in Norderhov in 1840 show your very very interesting find for Jens Jensen.
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=1111&idx_id=1111&uid=ny&idx_side=-51

I find that very promising and very very interesting. You just might have it right.

Try to sort out who is who, source LDS records.

Peder Olsen Monserud b. on Monserud in Norderhov Sept. 17. 1824, parents Ole Nielsen Monserud (Frøgstad eie)and Maren Truelsdatter, see #125

Peder Olsen Trøgstadeie-Monserud married in Norderhov Elen Maria Engebretsdatter (b. Sept. 29. 1821 in Norderhov) Jan 23. 1853, see #3

They emigrated April 1. 1854, see right page #26-27

Did Peder Olsen Monserud have a namesake or did his wife Elen Maria Engebretsdatter die on the ship?
Was a daughter Lina born on the ship?

Peder Olsen Monserud married 1855 in Waterville, Allamakee, Iowa to Sofia Norvold.
Peter Monserud died Feb. 17. 1889 in Alamakee, Iowa.

If I recall correctly it was the 1870 census which listed daughter 'Lena/Lina' as born in Norway and the next child, a son called Ole, born 'on ocean'"Atlantic Ocean".
The 1860 census listed the family with a daughter older than Lena/Lina who was named Martha.

Peter and Sofia are buried in Allamakee Co., Iowa. Paint Creek cemetery? One of the genealogy websites for Allamakee Co. currently online had the complete listings for several cemeteries in that County available online.

Interesting info. Hopkins, Lina (Oline?) cofuses me:
A son Ole named after his fathers father born born on Ocean, we can assume the mother probably died in a child birth.

Source, LDS records;
Sophia Norvold was Sofia Jacobsdatter born i Skedsmo on farm Sørumseie April 22. 1826 to Jacob Hansen Norvold and Marthe Svendsdatter, right page #25

Jacob Hansen born 1804, no records available, could have been of interest to confirm if he was from Norvold, he married Marthe Svendsdatter Sørumseie 1825.
Jacob died in Beaver Creek, Minnesota Feb. 18. 1878, Marte died Jan. 12. 1870 in Alamakee, Iowa.
Sophia died Feb. 25. 1893, Allamakee, Iowa

Kåre,

I was editing my earlier post about the children shown for Peter and Sofia at the same time you were adding another post.

I'm of the opinion that the two oldest daughters, Martha and "Lena", could have been Sofia's children before she married Peder Olsen Monserud in Iowa. The persons above asking the questions originally all seem to think the father of 'Josephine Magdalene' (probably Lena) was called Ole Hanson.

There are many more US records available for northeast Iowa and southeast southwest Minnesota and those persons first asking the questions should be real busy doing careful investigation in greater depth. I had a friend (Hjornevik) who was once quite successful in getting records from those midwestern areas in her family research.

Beaver Creek Minnesota is also in Rock County.

I misunderstood Hopkins, sorry.

Perhaps Elen Maria or Peder Monserud had a daughter Oline/Pauline - Lina born out of wedloc before they married .
