Pontus Mork (b.1830) and Sofia Mork (b.1832) are my gr-gr-gr-grandparents and resided in Christiana, Norway at the 1865 census. Pontus was born in Sweden. Their daughter Charlotte (b.1860) came to NZ in 1874 at the age of 14, we think by herself. She married here and had six children.

I'd like to find out more about the family she left behind in Norway, her parents and her brother Thor (b. 1862) and Anna (b.1864). They don't appear in Christiana in the 1875 census. All birth years are +/- 1 year.

Pontos Leonard Mørk lived in downtown Kristiania/Oslo according to the 1900 census together with the whole family. Pontus, a tailor came from Bohuslen, Sweden. That is somewhere along the west coast from the Norwegian border down to Gothenburg.

Actually I can't find any Charlotte Mørk (Mørch) at all in the Christiania 1865 census. Do you have a link to her in the census?

Sorry, she appears as Amand(a) on the census in 1865, she was known as Charlotte during her life here in NZ, it was her second name. She used it on shipping lists. Her father's name is spelt Pontos on the 1865 census but cannot find anyone on the 1875 or 1900 census.

Hi Deb The LDS has Pontus Mork's death as April 8 1869 Click Here That would be why he doesn't show on the census

I just found another record for Pontus on the LDS but this one has his death date as March 28 1872. These records are submitted by individuals and errors can be made. You would have to consult the microflimed parish records to find out for sure which date is correct.

Thanks Carla, it goes some way to explaining why his daughter came to NZ so young, if he died early and his wife was bringing up the children on her own - can't imagine how difficult that must have been at the time.

Hi Found them in the emigrant list going to New Zealand in 1873 I think. It looks like Sophie remarried to Fredrik Jonsen. The kids match and ages match so looks like you may be back in NZ looking for information

Thanks so much Carla, that's a huge surprise to us, we thought Amanda Charlotte came alone. Will be a little easier to search here now. Deb
