Hello Everyone. I am researching the Mincks family. I have them in the UK in the early 1800's but I don't know where they came from before that. Will someone please tell me if Mincks is a Norwegian name. I know that they are a family of Mariners so I am trying all the seafaring nations to see if anyone recognizes the name.
Thank you
Arky

What makes you think they don't go way back in the UK?
It doesn't sound anything like a norwegian name, but travelling from Norway to Canada any norwegian name would sometimes change so much that Minck still could be an americanized norwegian name.

Hello, as a Mincks myself, I can tell you what I know. The name is actually Germanic in origin, coming from an area near present day Poland, however there is a coat of arms for the Mincks family registered in Germany and Luxembourg (go figure?). The name has ties to the mink animal and represents 'strength'. Hope that helps

I have married into the Mincks family. I was told the family was Scandinavian (Viking) descent. Someone in the family knows the original name it is quite long. When this branch of the family came to the U.S. they americanized the name. We live in Southwest Missouri and the family is large.
