Thank you for this information. I am hoping I can find relatives or people who know of this family? Are there any family members left in Norway? |

Hi, this must be John Bernt Iverson in census-1865: click here
- Iver Jhonsen, housefather, cotter with land, married, 38y, born in Voldens Parish
- Lydia Andria Antonsdatter, his wife, 35y, born in Bodø Parish
- Jhon B. Iversen, their son, 2y, born in Bodø Parish
- Lovise Sjalotthe Iversdatter, their daughter, 2y, born in Bodø Parish
Here they are in census-1875: click here
John's mother Lydia Andrea is now a widow and farmer, and she has 5 kids. She has taken the last name "Brun". Their youngest child is born in 1873, so Iver [John's father] must have died 1872-75.
- Lydia Andrea Brun, housemother, widow, farmer, born 1831 Bodø
- Marta Susana Iverssen, daughter, supported by her mother, born 1860 in Bodø
- Jon Bernt Iverssen, son, born 1864 Bodø
- Iver Andreas Iverssen, son, born 1866 Bodø
- Anton Johan Iverssen, son, born 1868 Bodø
- Lauris Amandus Iverssen, son, born 1873 Bodø
Johns sister Martha Susana is in foster home in 1865: click here
From the list of emigrants (posting #2), it looks like all(?) 3 brothers of John are emigrating on the same day (June 17th, 1885): Andreas, Anton and Laurits. Was John a twin? Lovise Sjalotthe (census 1865) looks to be at the same age. I could not locate her in census 1875. She could be dead, and thus John named his first daughter after her...

thank you jwiborg! It is possible John was a twin, since he also had twin girls (sadly, died on voyage to USA)
you may have helped find links -- possibly this is Martha/John Bernt's maternal grandfather, being his mother is Lydia Antonsdatter!
I thank you... I wondered how I was going to find Lydia's parents when there is such a time gap between 1865 and earlier census.
thank you Charly-the-girl |

Jan (jwiborg) gave you information from two censuses that list Lydia's birth in Bodø parish (Nordland) and an approximate birth year. The LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City has microfilm copies of the parish baptisms for the years which should include her entry - you can order and use that microfilm at the nearest LDS Family History Center to you. The baptimal entry in those registers should list the child's father and mother.

Jan is excellent, catching the brothers as well. I contacted my local LDH Family History Center; there will be an "expert on Norway" there tomorrow, and I will be taking all your information with me. Again thank you, everyone, for the time and effort you took to help me locate and verify these people.
I am trying to pin down John's wife, Hannah's birthdate. MY BEST LEAD is Hanna Torstensdtr, 1865 census. I do not want to follow that line until I can this is truly my relative.
Her birth year is listed as 1860, but calculations from her obit place her at 1865. |

I hope you'll enjoy the films available at the Family History Center - and the company. If you haven't looked at Norwegian parish records before - I'd recommend that you study this excellent article on the subject before the films arrive at your FHC. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/na20.html
And most of all, I wish you good handwriting on the records when they do arrive! |

Just a quick note, for the record: I found mother Lydia Iverson buried with her son John Bernt Iverson and Daughter Martha/Marta Iverson Skavdal (her husband has a patronymical surname as well that I don't have at this moment - Skavdal is a farm name) They are buried at Ocean View Cemetery, Port Angeles, Washington, USA
John and Hannah's twins died on the journey to America; their daughter Louise/Lovise tratically died around the age of 10 in an accident when she slipped on a log and fell into the river and was swept away.
John Bernt was a twin, and his sister was named Lovise/Louise. Sister Martha/Marta went to live with her maternal grandparents at that time while their parents tended to their farm, as the first landholders of Prestoya, Boda, Nordland.
John Bernt and Hannah were divorced, and John moved to Florida and presumably was remarried. I have to find the paperwork for these events.
We are still looking for family that John Bernt and Hannah's dauther, Olga (Iverson) Thorsen (she had one other married name, and my records aren't with me) visited on trips to Norway. These would most likely be her mother's family and cousins. John Bernt's whole family migrated to the USA, but there would still be uncles and aunts of his.
I'll be back with better information later, but just wanted to post this bit now while I was here. |
