Skuttle is not a norwegian name. And Ole is about the most common name in Norway, so when your Ole isn't born, has no immigration date, no father or mother, no death date, no relatives, no wife, eight unnamed children, how do you expect anyone to be able to help you?
But there existed one Ole Skutle (with one t) in the 1900 cencus. He is at the time imprisoned in Trondheim, born 1876, and is learning to make shoes when he's not involved in "criminal activity".
Could this be your man:

Hello Wally,
I would guess your Ole Skuttle should come from the Voss area in Hordaland, Norway. There are some farms there called "Skutle". 72 people lives there in census-1865, out of them 7 are called Ole. His last name in the census are prob. not Skutle, but rather his fathers first name + "sen"....
However, none of the Ole's on the Skutle farm are born around 1838... Link to Hordaland census
Port of emigration for people from the Voss area would be Bergen. Link to the Bergen emigration records (1874-1930)
His first emigration are not recorded if he was in Iowa already in 1870, but a potensial visit back to Norway could be recorded...
There are records of 3 "Ole Skutle", but none of them are born around 1838...
Well, I hope this gets you going... Good luck!!

Hi again Wally,
Here they are in census 1880 for Rock city, Mitchell county, Iowa: click here
- Ole O Skutle, 43, born in Norway
- Martha Skutle, 42, born in Norway
- Mathias Skutle, 19, born in Wis.
- Micheal Skutle, 16, born in Wis.
- Mari O Skutle, 13, born in Ia.
- Andrew Skutle, 9, born in Ia.
- David Skutle, 7, born in Ia.
- Sarah B Skutle, 3, born in Ia.
- Clara R Skutle, 9/12 Sep, born in Ia.
Their oldest son Michael are born in Wisconsin around 1861!
And Oles name contains an "O", with could indicate that Ole's fathers first name began with O..., Maybe his name was Ole Olsen Skutle, so his father was also an "Ole"....?
He must be born around 1837-1838, and emigrated in the late 1850's, possibly up to 1861. Thus you won't find him in the 1865 norwegian census....

Hello again Wally,
I think I've found him in the list of Emigrants from Voss 1837-1864! click here
23rd of April, 1856: Bachelor Ole Olsen Skutle ,18 years, born January 5th, 1838, going to North America...
...and did he travel with his older sister Randvei Olsdatter Skutle, 21years old? She is listed on the line below Ole...

Jan, Thanks a million for your help. It means a lot. Now the last for which I am searching is what became of their son, Mathias. I have him as dieing in 1928 in Buffalo Center, Iowa, and being burried in St. Ansgar Church in Mitchell County, Iowa. Wally |

Hi, from LDS; I've found a possibility for Ole's parents; it could be OLE PEDERSEN & MARTHE GODSKALKSDATTER
They have a son named Ole christened in Voss on Feb. 4th, 1838. And they have a daughter named Randvei born on June 3rd, 1835, christened in Voss on June 21st, 1835...

Later US censuses will show that both Ole Skutle and MO Skutle are living in Winnebago County. - One in Lake Mills the other in Buffalo Center. MO was a merchant - of a general store. |

Hi all, This may be a bit morbid, but I have my own reasons for asking. Did Mathias O Skuttle ever work as an undertaker in Worth or Winnebago Counties around 1901? Wally |

MO Skutle is listed as a merchant - general store in several Winnebago Co. censuses. No reason he couldn't also hire out a hearse (motorized or horse and carriage type) if decided to. Any published history of Winnebago County Iowa might help you determine what the situation actually was. |
