Yes there is a mark in the column and also a check mark outside on the margin for him being a US citizen. There are several avenues to become a citizen of US in that day. Perhaps he filed on his own, in either county court or federally or perhaps his parents came over and became citizens and he became citizen as part of their family

I'd start first with Sangamon county since it appears he was there from at least 1865....

Thanks for sharing picture. Photos help make them come alive....

Still haven't found John Michaelson the father. BTW Elizabeth Michaelson listed the father's birth place as Denmark Norway on John Marion's death certificate. Is there a town in Norway named Denmark???

There were 24 farms named Danmark (Denmark) in the 1865 census for Norway in following municipalities;
- Nes/Næs, Hedmark county
- Spydeberg, Østfold county
- Hedrum, Vestfold county
- Nærstrand, Rogaland county

Here is a Sarah Michaelson aged about 30 years living in Sangamon county, Illinois in 1880:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MXKF-WW1

She apparently has a baby named Theodore Michaelson aged 1 month. Have you ever heard of this child?

That is his ex-wife. I know he got custody of the children in the divorce but where is he and John Marion? In the 1880 I found a John Michaelson I have checked the Poor House rolls and find Sarah in there on more than one occasion. There is also a Sarah Michaelson that has a son ,Theodore, while in there. http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1880usfedcen&sin=C0000006&siv=4240552-00162

I notice that the transcription of John Marion Michaelson's death record his birthplace is recorded as "Jordon" Illinois. Jordon was located in Clay County:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jordon,_Illinois

If that birthplace is true what were they doing there?

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MKHH-6J6

From the pre 1916 death index at Illinois secretary of state databases:

Her obit was published on 24 June 1906 in the Daily Illinois State Journal published at Springfield pg 6 col 2. In it her survivors are listed as husband John Michaelson, daughter Pearl, father R. Huggins and several siblings.

Here is their marriage in the Illinois marriage database 1763-1900:

Sorry about this long absence. I've got computer woes. John Marion was married twice. His first wife was Emma Huggins (I think the certificate says Blue Mound, Illinois) and they had a daughter Pearl. I wonder why Pearl is found living with an uncle?? Could his wife be Emma's sister? John Marion's wife was Elizabeth Esther DOWNING and she had a brother George.LOL Could Pearl have married a relative?? Blue Mound in Wikipedia is said located in Macon County.

I'd never thought about his birthplace! Good question. John Marion's daughter Bette said to me "I would like to know how we ended up in Peoria" (where she lived).
