The records from Vallset are a bit spotty. Here is a confirmation record for a John Mikkelson b 1835 in Romedal #13:
Source information: Hedmark county, Romedal, Parish register (official) nr. 4 (1847-1861), Confirmation records 1851, page 132.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=8850&idx_id=8850&uid=ny&idx_side=-139

Working too many questions at once today. My mistake, it was Anders Mikkelson #13

I've gone through each of the four parishes Kåre outlined on page 4 for 1835 -1836 baptisms or confirmations 1849-51 and found only this Johannes living on Danmark, #12

Source information: Rogaland county, Sjernarøy in Nedstrand, Parish register (official) nr. A 7 (1816-1870), Confirmation records 1850, page 276.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=1635&idx_id=1635&uid=ny&idx_side=-280

Neither he nor his father are Mikkelsons.

It would probably good for others to look over these records as well.

"There were 24 farms named Danmark (Denmark) in the 1865 census for Norway in following municipalities;
- Nes/Næs, Hedmark county
- Spydeberg, Østfold county
- Hedrum, Vestfold county
- Nærstrand, Rogaland county"

These are the parishes with a Danmark named farm which might be the clue but I found no Johannes Mikkelson in either available baptism records or if they were lacking in the confirmation records.

You bring up four names. The first two are married with several children so less likely as candidates. The third is Johan Mikklesen of Vallsett profiled on the bottom of page 3.

The fourth is from Vestre Eiker, Buskerud, here is a link to his census record.

The only trouble is the 1865 census was taken on 1 Jan 1866 so any John / Johan/ Johannes Mikkelson found in it cannot be the John Michaelson in Illinois since he is getting married in Illinois in 1865!

Copied from the Illinois state secretary of state marriage database:
MIKELSON, JOHN LAUYER, SARAH JANE 1865-09-16 00001499 SANGAMON

This is from familysearch.org concerning the 1865 Illinois census.

Name index and images of the Illinois state census taken on 3 July 1865. The following counties are missing: Gallatin, Mason, Monroe and part of Tazewell.

They were married in September and if you see the opriginal certificate, the spelling is LAWYER. It was just tyranscribed wrong

sorry "original". If the census was taken in July and they were married in September then they had a short engagement.

For clarity, I meant the Norwegian 1865 census was actually taken on 1 Jan 1866, that's why it's exceedingly unlikely John made it home for the count since he got married in Illinois in September 1865.

The Illinois state census of 1865 was a heads of household only to be named, any others in the household are numeric quantity counted by sex.

There is quite a long paragraph about the young men who left, a more proficient Norwegian language person might have better luck with reading.

I checked the 1865 census and did not find this possible. Perhaps he died but maybe he moved away?

While this Johan is in the Vaccination records of Gjerpen in 1837, I did not find him in the confirmations circa 1850. His older brother Nis is in the confirmations right at where expected so it's likely Johan may have died.

Indeed he did die, #18 3 1/2 year Johan:

He was not found in the 1865 census as Jo* Mi* b Ring* 183*. Checking the out migrating records found a couple of only slightly possibles, mostly with much later birthdates:

John M Michaelson's funeral was handled by W.T. Vancil Funeral Home in Springfield. Funeral homes sometimes maintain their old records and contain extra details. Apparently this firm is the survivor of W.T. Vancil:

O.P, or Debbi, did you turn up the records concerning John Michaelson Sr's property in Sangamon County?
