When was Petra, her mother and stepfather born? Where did they emigrate from? Where did they arrive in the U.S? Additional information would help us to research. |

The Minnesota Historical Society has an online death index for the period 1908-1996:
http://people.mnhs.org/dci/Search.cfm
There is a Mary Jensen dead in 1917 in Freeborn County. There are also 10 Maren Jensens listed. Many times a relative would sign the death certificate as an informant and that could lead to a clue. |

Someone has submitted Petra Svante Augustsen to the LDS International Genealogical Index (IGI). That index lists that she was born 05 AUG 1871 Tyristrand, Buskerud, Norway. It lists her father as Svante August Pettersen and her mother as Maren Sofie Andersdatter. The online version of the IGI (at familysearch.org) does not specify the source of the information (the name of the individual who submitted). I'll make a note to check that again at the LDS Family History Center later this week and see if I can possibly locate a name of the source. |

That^s correct, I think you have found one of my brother`s searts for her. The information is cor. Mary^s right name in Norway was Maren Sophie Andersdatter, her first husband Svante August Petterson (Peterson). They got 4 children, Petra, Adolf,Bernhard and Constanse Marie. We can`t find anything for Petra and Constanse Marie Mary get marrid 2. time ca.1886. The date for Petra Is cor., I only live 15miles (US) from Tyristrand, and have the date from the churts record.

She was not Petra Jensen but Petra Haug. According to the Minneapolis Minnesota Directories 1889-91 Magnus Jensen a blacksmith had the address 612, 13 Avenue S - and so had Petra Haug a seamstress. That make sense since Petra was only a stepdaughter of Magnus and Mary (Maren) used the name Maren Haug in the Norwegian Emigrant Protocol. She first used the surename Jensen when she arrived to New York. I hope it will be easier to find something more about her with this name. [:I Kjetil] |

Maren (or Mary) Johnson (Jensen) b. 14 Feb 1846 died on August 19th 1924. Magnus Johnson died 28 Nov 1918. They are probably both burried at Crystal Lake Cemetery in north Minneapolis. Maren's death took place at the home of her daughter at 5340 41 Avenue S. The name of the daughter remains to find. However the informant of the death certificate was Lillian Hansen at the very same address. Is it possible that Petra might have changed her first name? Maren is mentioned elsewhere as mother of seven children. She had four then she left Norway. I asume that Harold and the two step children must have been the other three. She was 44 when Harold was born and according to 1910 census no child were living together with them. Therefore probably no other child than Harold grew up if they got more than one common child. The big question is then - WHO WAS LILLIAN HANSEN? |

Hi I found Lillian Hanson in the 1920 census with Mary Johnson living with her and Lillian's husband Hans but I don't think this is the correct one Lillian Hanson age 40 born Norway immigrated 1890 Mary Johnson age 73 immigrated 1890. Hans Hanson is 35 so maybe Lillian/Petra?? could have fudged on her age Carla |

I also saw Hans and Lillian Hanson living at the same place as Mary Johson in the 1920 census. Unlike Carla I am sure these are the right persons even if their ages is not correctly mentioned. I also found Hans and Lillian in the 1930 census and their years of birth are there different from those of the 1920 census. However , the year of the immigration of Hans as well as his occupation are the same in both. In 1930 census Lillian immigrated in 1885 and was 55 y.o. In the 1920 census she immigrated in 1890 and was 40 y.o. For Hans it is even worse 35 y.o. in 1920 and only four years older in 1930. The fact that he is a meat-cutter of occupation, arrived in 1911 and have a wife named Lillian ought to be enough to believe them to be the same persons.

Petra Augustsdatter, Petra Haug and Lillian P. Hansen is defently the same person. According to Lillian P. Hansens certificate of death she was born in Norway Aug. 5th 1872. Petra Augustsdatter was born exactly same date but in 1871 instead of 1872. She died in Minneapolis on Feb. 1st 1948. The informater was her husband Hans who there seemed to be 20 years younger than her? Could she have been married once before? She is mentioned in the Minneapolis Minnesota Directories 1889-91 as Petra Haug. In 1900 and 1910 census I cannot find her, while she in 1920 census shows up again as Lillian Hansen. Hans Hansen immigrated first in 1911 and if his age in Lillian's death certificate is correct, he was about 20 years in 1911. They therefore probably married closer to 1920 than to 1911. The remaining question is then: What was Petra or Lillians surename in most of those years between 1890 and 1920? Was she married and did she have any children? |

One other possible lead in the 1900 census, living with Magnus and Maren is a grand daughter. Gertrude Livingston born Aug 1892 in Minnesota, both parents born in Norway. So is she Jenny's or Petra's child? If you could locate a birth certificate you could get some more answers. Carla |
