Well I spent 3 hrs going through microfilm at family history library and with no luck. I am trying to locate birth record for my father, Jacob Olaf Farsund (changed to Ludviksen) born 1903 in Farsund Norway. Would there be anywhere to write to obtain any birth records. I know these were kept by churches but didnt know if there was somewhere to write to obtain any records since I dont think they are all available online yet. Did they keep records in 1903, I would think so, since I was looking at older records on microfilm. I couldnt believe I didnt find anyone in our family on the film. There were people from Farsund, but no one I could relate to. Would appreciate any help or feedback. Thank you, Linda Eplin |

Find it very unlikely that your father was born in the norwegian town Farsund, though he's carrying this name. Much more likely he's born on the FARM Farsund in Førde, where a Ludvik residented in 1900 who presumably was his father - thus the Ludviksen form (litturally "son-of-Ludvik"). I assume this is your grandparents and your father's older siblings in the 1900 cencus:

Could this be the right persons?
(There are actually 25 persons in that cencus with the surname Farsund, but all in the districts around this farm and none of them in the mentioned town...) |

Wow - I am so impressed, I thought I checked on digitalarkivet, but i must not have looked in the right places. I am so thankful you found this info. Is there any way to get an original copy of his certificate? and if so, where would I get it from. Would it be on the microfilm from Family History but maybe I am wondering if I was not looking correctly. Any direction would be appreciated, and thanks to Harald and Askeroi so much. I am very thankful for this info ! ! ! Thank you, Linda Eplin Lombard, Illinois |

I think your Jacob Olaf Farsund/Ludviksen may have been related to my great-uncle, John Farsund.
I see at your Jacob's baptism, there was a witness, Johannes Mat****on Farsund and it appears the same Johannes (born 1887) was living at the Farsund farm in 1900. In the Emigrants from Bergen list, there is a Johannes Thomas Martiasson Farsund, single, leaving Norway in March 1909.
I don't know the middle/patronymic name of my great-uncle, but I know he was born September 7, 1887 "near Bergen", Norway. He immigrated before 1914 since that's the year he married Ida Otelia Rosvold in Minneapolis, Minnesota. John and Ida had one son, Arnold. John died September 10, 1974 in Minneapolis.
John had a "cousin", Nicolena Farsund who was born March 15, 1872 "near Bergen". She married Johan Olaus Rosvold about 1904 in Minnesota. "Lena", as she was known, died in 1931 in Minneapolis.
The name "Tollef" appears to be a name in your family of Farsunds. In the Minnesota Death Certificate Index, there is a Tolef Farsund who died December 2, 1953 in Hennepin County, MN (probably in Minneapolis).
Do any of the above names sound familiar?
Maybe someone from Norway can check parish records to see if the above people are related to your Jacob Olaf Ludviksen.

joyhart, I will try to research this info more and will get back to you. I do know that my mother used to write to someone in Minnesota. I think I still have the envelope with name and address, but I will have to look for it. Thanks, Linda |

I have tried looking for Johannes Mathiassen b.1887 in the Sogn og fjordane birth records, but cannot locate. He is in the 1900 census living on the Farsund farm with my grand father Ludvig Tollefsen, trying to see what relationship he is to my dad Jacob Olaf, born 1903. thanks, Linda |
