Looking for information on Harold Hoem supposedly born in the Lofoten islands . Born around 1890. Worked on a ship that came to the US perhaps when he was 14 or 15 and then supposedly "jumped" ship and stayed in the US. The earliest information I have is a photo when he was working for the railroad in Tennessee about 1916. It doesn't not appear that he became naturalized.
Thera are no persons called Hoem in the Lofoten area in the 1900 cencus. Neither is there any farms carrying this name in this area.
But there are farms and people elsewhere. Of course there are no Harold's as this isn't a norwegian name. The closest I get is this guy, his name is Hoem, his first name starts with H and continues with something not english and he lived in northern Norway (though pretty far from the Lofoten area) and he was born pretty close to 1890. His father was a school teacher. This is a guess, a possible candidate, but I wouldn't bet on it as long as you don't give any more information.
Did Harold marry - what did he call his children if he had any?
I searched from the US side first. I found some persons named Hoem who were born in Norway but no Harold, Harold or even Harry. So I played with the spelling and found a Harold O. Hoen (28 yrs old) living in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. He works as a sailor on a 'lake boat'. It looks like he immigrated to the states about 1911 or 1914. I also checked in the state of Tennessee - found a few Norwegian born persons - but nothing similar to Hoem, Hoen or Harold.
