Hello: I am brand new to this list so hope I do it right!
My paternal ggrandfather, Otto Hudson, was born in Christiania, Akershus, Norway on 29 December 1859. His parents were Ellof Hudson and Doretta Sophia Charlotta Froink or Francke. His parents were supposedly born about 1833, of, Oslo. In the 1865 census for Christiania it shows my ggrandfather as a pleibarn (foster child), age 6 with his birthplace as Danmark. He was christened in Kobenhavn, Denmark in February 1860. His foster parent's were Anders Engebretsen and Ellen Engebretsen of Christiania. They had a daughter, Hansine, age 14. (1) How did a person become a pleibarn? (2) Is there a department in the government that would have records of this? In 1871 I find Otto (Otte), age 11, listed on a passenger list coming to the US from Liverpool with Ellen Engebretsen (his foster mother). They came to Utah and she remarried a Sorensen in 1872. My ggrandfather lived in their household until 1889. There is no mention of the foster father. I am trying to find out what happened to my gggrandparents, if Otto had siblings, etc. Can you give me some direction from here. I was told that his parents were musicians and moved around alot.
