Believe she traveled from Norway between 1865 to 1873.

Maren was born in Norway on April 26, 1848 and came to the United States at the age of 18 in 1866.

She sometimes used the name of Mary or Marie.

She married Hans Peter Vick in Wilmar, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, on 14 Sep 1874.

Peter Vick immigrated from Denmark and arrived in NY in 1869 or 1870 on the Allemania.

They moved to North Dakota in 1892 and remained there until 1902 when they homesteaded in Weyburn, Saskatechwan, Canada. Peter died in 1908 and Maren went to live with her sons at Assinaboia, Saskatchewan, Canada until 1915.

Maren then moved to Ophiem, Montana where she homesteaded and lived until her death on Jan 15, 1924.

Would love to locate her parents in Norway and also to identify the ship and the date when she came to America.

Roger Vick

1880 Minnesota census:
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=MINN1880&gardpostnr=16364&personpostnr=16364&tid=12:18:35#nedre

Maren is a very common name -
But I found their neighbour, Torger Nilsen Green. He was from Modun parish, Buskerud county. There is a chance they came by same ship.

Torger Nilsen Green as emigrant:

I looked for these persons in other US censuses.
Did she have a son named Walter about 1881 in Minnesota? The 1920 US census shows a Walter Wick with his Danish born wife and a large number of children living in Valley County (Opheim) Montana. He lists his father was born Denmark and his mother born Norway.
On the same page is a 73 yr old female Marion G. Wick, born in Norway and a widow. (I cannot decipher the immigration year)

The 1900 census for Richland County (Garfield) North Dakota shows Peter Vick to have been born Jan or Jun 1844 in Denmark and lists his immigration year as 1870. His wife's name looks like Maryan, born Aprl 1851 in Norway, immigrated 1863. They have sons Fred, Ole, Walter (born Sept 1881 in Minn.), Carl, Vitor or Victor, and Oskr - one daughter named Marthie? The couple has been married for 26 yrs.

Yes, the 1880 Minnesota and 1900 North Dakota census both show Maren (Hoff) Vick and that is my Great grandmother. It's interesting that you referenced Torger Nilsen Green because there was a Chris Green who was related to the family in some way and a very close friend here in USA.

Yes, this was my Great grandmother in the 1880 census in Minnesota and the 1900 census in North Dakota. Hadn't found her in the Opheim, Montana census in 1920 but that is where she homesteaded in about 1920. She died on 15 Jan 1924 and is buried in Opheim, Montana.

Some of the dates and ages reported for Maren Vick in the census are quite a bit off but guess some women don't like to reveal their true age.

I'll take a look at the 1920 Census and see what I can find.

Thanks.

She can be found in the 1920 census under Wick, not Vick. That old confusion between W's and V's

School District 9, Valley County, Montana
Marion G. Wick, 73, head, widowed, born Norway, parents born Norway, no occupation, dates scratched out.

Living next door to Walter Vick/Wick and his large family, he is a farmer born in Minnesota.

The 1880 US census showed Torger N. Green to have a son named Christopher/Christoffer (Chris).
I looked for Torger Nilsen Green in Modum and found a possible there in the 1865 census. But it listed his birthplace as having been in Sigdal, Buskerud. In a listing of the farm names in Sigdal are both Green AND Hoff. That might the area to do some careful research in.

Unfortunately there's no Mar* Hoff in Buskerud in the 1865 cencus. There is one at about the right age in Sandefjord, though. She's born in "Lien" wich could be a misprint for "Lier" which is in Buskerud and prestty close to Sigdal.

But if this is the right person there's nothing to learn about her parents - as she's living at her brother's place:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=hentglobal®ister=fodeaar&pgj=129&teljing=ft1865&filnamn=f60706.wc2&amt=7&funnenr=73

There are no Hoffs living in Lier in 1865, and only a couple of Hoffs in Buskerud - who could not be her parents because their almost the same age as her.

But as she's living with her brother her parents may very well be dead - and that that's why they're not in the cencus...

Hopefully this was to some help...

My cousin Randy made a trip to Norway and Denmark where my great grandparents came from. He is in Liberia now working for the UN in a peacekeeping operation, so doesn't have access to the records he found but this is what he remembers. He said spelling was only a guess.

This is all from memory. I printed it off at the time, but its in a file folder at home.

I found a Maren Hansdatter, correct year of birth, in the Norwegian census of 1865. She was listed as a servant on the Hoff farm in Askim, (pronounced uh-shim as I have found out from my Norwegian colleagues here), which is south east of Oslo. I visited there in July 2001, and spent the afternoon at the library going through microfilm, looking for a birth, baptism or christening record but came up empty. I was very limited on my time and the machine wasn't the best, but I couldn't find anything. Found a ton of Maren Hansdatters, but none with the right, or nearly right birthdate.

I'm having trouble pullin up this record using Vick or Wick. Can you post a link to the page?

The information is correct, Valley County, Montana and School District 9. Walter Vick was her son.

Found Maren Vick's death certificate and it indicated her father's name was Christian Huff. Always was a difference in some opinions whether the name was Hoff or Huff.

I've found in both ways in census records.

Same with the first name. Death certificate says Marion, census records say Maria or Mary.

Now that we know the name of her father, maybe we can narrow down the search a little bit.
