I am searching for two brothers Torgersen from Øyer, Norway, who went with the ship Hero from Christiania to Hull on May 7th 1880, heading for Eau Claire WI, which maybe was not their final destination. They are Peter Torgersen, b. 27 July, 1862, and Tollef Torgersen b. 7 Feb 1851, both in Øyer. Do anyone know what happened to them, where they settled and so on?
Happy for answers or clues to go on. |

I just came across this posting and would like to respond. Peter and Toluf show up on the 1880 U.S. census and were living in a boarding house in Meridean, Wisconsin. The woman who ran the boarding house was Anna Ward, and her tenants were listed under her name in the census. Peter is 17 yrs old at the time and Toluf was listed as 29 yrs old. They appear to be the brothers of Karine Torgersdtr, who was the wife of Erik Olson Moen. Erik is believed to be the brother of my great-grandmother Lina, who married Ole Peterson, and came to Canada from Norway around 1860. Ole Peterson fought in the US Civil War and died shortly after returning home. He died on December 5, 1864. I would very much like to find out more info on Lina, who I am quite sure came from Oyer with Ole and their daughter Anne. |

Hi Peder,
Being an American you may not be aware that all parish registers (like Øyer's) have been digitized and are available online to any researcher. Since you already suspect a relationship you could go through the registers and harvest family information.
Here is the list of Øyer registers at the Digitalarkivet: Oppland Øyer: 1671-1727, Parish register (official) Øyer: 1733-1784, Parish register (official) Øyer: 1784-1824, Parish register (official) Øyer: 1824-1841, Parish register (official) Øyer: 1842-1857, Parish register (official) Øyer: 1858-1874, Parish register (official) Øyer: 1875-1878, Parish register (official) Øyer: 1899-1928, Banns register Øyer / Tretten: 1878-1893, Parish register (official) Øyer / Tretten: 1878-1893, Parish register copy Øyer / Tretten: 1894-1905, Parish register (official) Øyer / Tretten: 1894-1905, Parish register copy Øyer / Tretten: 1905-1920, Parish register (official) Øyer / Tretten: 1906-1929, Parish register copy Øyer / Tretten: 1919-1932, Parish register (official) Øyer / Tretten: 1939-1953, Parish register copy Øyer / Øyer: 1863-1877, Parish register copy Øyer / Øyer: 1878-1897, Parish register (official) Øyer / Øyer: 1878-1896, Parish register copy Øyer / Øyer: 1897-1913, Parish register copy Øyer / Øyer: 1897-1925, Parish register (official) Øyer / Øyer: 1906-1919, Parish register (official) Øyer / Øyer: 1913-1928, Parish register copy Øyer / Øyer: 1929-1947, Parish register copy
Also the Digitalarkivet has the 1865 Norwegian census transcription online and parts of the 1875 which might help you put the family together. A possible family in 1865 includes sons Tøllev (Tollef) and Peter and daughter Karen:

I think you are right. Karen Torgersdatter age 20 on farm Galterud, Øyer, in 1865 was bap. Karine #82
Her father Torger Thoresen was a widower in 1865, her mother was Petronelle Pedersdatter.

Karine Torgersdatter married Erik Olsen Klevmoen (Moen), they em. 1868 with Hannah Parr, passengers #20-21
They had a son Ole b. June 3. 1867 on Kleve, bap. June 23, not recorded on Hannah Parr.
Erik paid 42 Spd (Speciedaler) in 2013 ca 9000 Kroner, ca 1500 Dollar for the journey, probably four all four.

The main pages can be translated to English by clicking on English in the navigation bars.
The original parish registers will be in Norwegian--that is to be expected. There are several sites that offer translations of the the printed page headings of the parish records and that would be useful to you.
You will also have to be able to read hand-writing. As you get familiar with any particular hand--reading will become easier.
Here is a good spot to start: http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/index.html

You are right, Ole 3/4 of a year. Erik was a widower when he married Karine Jan. 9. 1867. Widower and cottager Eric Kleve and Maid Karine Galterud #5
Passenger #21 on Hannah Parr, Johannes Eriksen 68 from Øyer was Eriks uncle.

Thanks for the help. Now that erik olsen moen and karine are documented, I would most like to find my great-grandmother who is said to be a sister of Erik. Her first name after she came to Wisconsin was every thing from Lina, to Olea, to Olia, to Lena. In Norway she was born in 1830, and so was her husband Ole Pedersen/Pederson. They had a daughter Anne who was born in Norway on October 14, 1855. They left Norway for Quebec in about 1860 or 1861, and eventually made their way to Wisconsin in around 1863. In 1864 Lina's husband Ole joined the army and fought in the Civil War. He died from injuries suffered there on December 5, 1864 |

Did Lina make it to the 1900 census so you could get a month and year of birth?
Also maybe Lina got a widow's pension based on her husband's service? |

Eriks parents were Ole Olsen and Anne Eriksdatter Kleve.
Olea, Olia, Lena, perhaps she was bap. Oline. She was a Olsdatter. And she em. before 1864. Do you know if Ole Petersen also came from Øyer?
The firstborn of Ole and Annes children to my knowledge was Erik Jan. 24. 1828, the Morten Jan 8. 1830 and Erik Nov. 10. 1832. There are also Ole Olsen and Anne Eriksdatter in the neighbor parish Ringebu who married ca 1822. Same couple or namesakes?

Another possibility. Anne Eriksdatter was born ca 1796. Here she is as widow with her son widower Erik who helps his mother on Moen 1865
Just a thought; Was Olia born to Anne Eriksdatter or Ole Olsen before they married?

In the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors database there were only a handful of Ole Peterson many of whom were in the 15th Wisconsin Infantry a famous Norwegian regiment.
The history of the regiment Det Femtende Regiment lists 4 Ole Peterson. The one who seems most closely to match yours in biographical detail is this fellow in Company J, pg 605-606:
The other Oles are much younger, or listed as single and Ole #1 in Company J died at Andersonville. There is also a picture on page 606 labeled "Menig Ole Peterson" not sure which Ole Peterson it is. |

jkmarler--Lina made it to the 1900 census where she is listed as Olea, and gives January, 1824 as her birth. However her burial record in the U.S. shows her as being 71 when she died on November 12, 1901--which would indicate a birth year of 1830. I am awaiting info regarding a possible widow's pension from the state of Wisconsin Historical Society. I have copies of muster reports for my great-grandfather's service in the Union Army where he was in Company F, of the 37th Regiment of the Wisconsin Infantry. I also have his casualty sheet indicating he was wounded on July 30,1964. His tombstone indicates he died December 5, 1864. Family members have heard that his wife received a pension. He's Ole Peterson in the Union Army. |
