Kaarto--I can't verify that Lina or Olea is a sister of Erik, but family members know that Lina's oldest son used to go by buggy to visit sons of Erik Olson Moen, who was said to be Lina's protector after her husband died. One Civil War report said that Ole Petersen/Peterson came from Trondheim. I do know that Lina and Ole came to Canada around 1860 or early 1861, because my grandfather was born in Quebec province in September, 1861 and his brother (my great uncle) was born there in April, 1863. They all must have left Canada shortly thereafter because Ole Peterson enlisted in the Union Army on March31, 1864 in Menomonie, Wisconsin. About 4 months later he was wounded and died at home December 5, 1864.

jkmarler and Kaarto-- I forgot to mention that Ole and Lina Petersen had a daughter Anne who was born in Norway on October 14, 1855 according to her tombstone her in Wisconsin. I also found a marriage record between an Ole Pedersen and Olea Olsdr in Sor Fron, Opland, Norway. The date of the marriage was June 12, 1850. That may not be them, but maybe it is. Even our records in Wisconsin over the years regarding ownership of real estate show that Lina also went by Lena and Olia, evidenced by an affidavit attesting to that fact by her oldest son. Most of the time they used the last name Peterson, but seem to have started using Pederson around the 1950's. Lena used an X for a signature on a real estate deed.

jkmarler-- That is them on the 1900 Census, and if you look down to the middle of that page you will find Erik O. Moen and his wife (listed as Caroline there) and all their kids. The enumerator for the census, listed at the top of the page is none other than Ever Torgerson, who is my paternal great-grandfather. The Pedersons and the Moens only lived a little over 1 mile apart, which would be consistent with them being related and homesteading near each other.

There's an interesting notation next to the word Canada on the unmarried brother's entry. Looks like Eng to me which might mean Ontario --although usually they are designated Canada East for Quebec and Canada West for Ontario.

Also Olea is reported to have had 2 children born and 2 children living.

I have a perfect Anne for you, but she was born in Nærøy

Anne Antonette Olsdatter born Oct. 14. 1855.
Parents; Ole Pedersen Hansvik and Anne Oline Olsdatter #5

Do you know if they had a daughter Marie ?
She was born on Hansvik April 14. 1858. The mother Anne Oline was now called Lina Olsdatter #79

This family emigrated from Hansvik in Nærøy to America April 26.1859. Ole Pedersen Hansvik and wife Olea Olsdatter with children, see r. page #4-5-6-7

Also Oles sister Marit Pedersdatter Hansvik age 29 em. with them, she is next.

Sources tells that several Norwegians voluntered to the Civil war almost before they had settled down.
The reason was not political but they hated slaveri.

Zowie, they look promising!

Here's a likely marriage record #19:
Ole Pederson and Olia Olsdtr, birthdates recorded for Ole as 11 Dec 1831 and Olia as 28 Dec 1825

Source information: Nord-Trøndelag county, Nærøy, Parish register (official) nr. 784A04 (1829-1859), Marriage records 1855, page 325.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=2523&idx_id=2523&uid=ny&idx_side=-307

I wonder if this might be Ole's family's arrival in Nærøy in 1849:
#35-39 father Peder Olson, sister Marit
Source information: Nord-Trøndelag county, Nærøy, Parish register (official) nr. 784A04 (1829-1859), Migration records 1850, page 533.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=2523&idx_id=2523&uid=ny&idx_side=-415

Good finding.
Looks like beeing the same family, Ole Pedersen 21, his parents Peder Olsen Vastrand (a farm in Åfjorden) and Anne Jonsdatter, a brother Jon 17 and a sister Marit 19.

They came from Åfjorden but was born in Alvdal in Tynset (Tønset)
Alvdal "River valley" separated from Tynset 1864

Peder Olsen Stejen married Anne Jonsdatter Brandvold in Alvdal in Tynset June 6. 1827, right page first marriage 1827 #1
