I have found back to my ggg- grandparents but am stuck with the family tree any further on this side. My ggg-grandparents were Tarje Jorgensen born around 1820 in Nissedals and Guro Tarjesdatter, born 1835 in Vinje. In the 1865 census they lived on Lien in Vinje and had two children: Jorgen and Gro. Could anyone help me out going further back or give me a lead as to where to look?

Thanks.

The parish records are excellent for tracking the generations earlier - the marriage record for Targje and Guro will probably list at least the bride and grooms fathers and where they each lived. Their baptisms will probably list both of their parents. etc. etc. etc.

You can also investigate if any bygdeboks were published for those areas which contained 'genealogy' of the residents of each farm. I've found that many bygdeboks are available by inter-library loan and the titles, authors and other publication details necessary for inter-library loan application are often listed in the online LDS library catalog.

I've found that bygdeboks can have more errors in them than the parish records - but they are often a quicker way to sketch out a 'research outline' for a family tree to be verified with better records like the parish records.
