In reading immigrants accounts from the 1850's, I have come across several references to "Norwegian miles". In one narrative, it said it was 7 English miles. Is an 1850 English mile the same as our current mile?

Mile - 5280 feet or 1609 meters
Kilometer - 1000 meters or .62137 of a mile
Nautical mile - 1.852 meters or about 6076 miles

I found my answer. Before 1862 in Norway, a landmil - old land mile was 11.295 kilometers X .6237 = 7.01 miles. The U.S. system has been based on the English system since the 1700's.
