I have been looking for the ship my grandfather came over on, I have found him and his family in the census1900 tonsberg haldan gunnerud his father hans,mother hanna, and all his brothers and sister, I know from the census in massachusettes 1920 has him listed in Massachusettes with his new wife and a boarder from norway named Carl Peterson, im looking for the name of the ship him came over on. Im estimating it was 1910-1913 Im looking for any information on the ship and the year and maybe some information on Carl Peterson. Thanks Kim Foster email address

I couldn't get the correct manifest to come up but this looks like it could be Halfdan.

| I saw that name listed on the manifest in Ellis Island, does anyone know if after they landed at ellis Island did they come to Boston Mass after New York. I was under the impression he docked in Boston. kim |

In the 1920 US census he calls himself Harry G. Gunnerud and lists that he immigrated in 1910 has at least started the process of US naturalization - or completed that process in 1917. (Have you also checked the 1930 US census?)
The series of papers and process required during that time period for naturalization should give you a great deal of additional information - possibly even including the name of the port of arrival and the ship he sailed/steamed on. |

He could have very well landed in Boston, the two ports are close and many times only some of the passengers disembarked at the Port of New York.
Recommend you read my article on this site about the Port of New York Federal passenger registers. There is no such thing as Ellis Island records, just the Federal customs manifests. People who did not get off the ship in New York are still listed on this database, the only way to verify your information is to rent the microfilm passenger list.
They did not "land" at Ellis Island but were ferried from their ship to be processed at the Ellis Island Immigration Center. Only third class passengers were processed there, first and second class were processed aboard the ship so even if they are on this very misleading website it does not mean that they were processed for immigration at Ellis Island.
If they were immigrating to New York City would they have gone into NY, otherwise, they were ferried across the harbor to New Jersey to catch trains to their final destination. |

| I have a copy of the 1930 census with no listing of ships list or anything like that, it list the children and wife all ten of them now, when you (Hopkins) refer to the series of papers and process required during naturalization, can you point me in the direction for naturalization, where do i go from here for information. Thanks kim |
