I am looking for the ancestors of my great-grandfather Benjamin Pederson. He was born on 6/7/1851. According to his death certificate, his father was Peter Jacobson. They lived on the Brekne (Braekne) farm in the Lista, Vest-Agder area of Norway and my grandmother's writings say that Benjamin was born there, but no records have been found that either of them were born there. Benjamin emigrated to the United States in 1871. A Peter Jacobson on the Torp farm in Lista/Vanse is a possibility, but is not verified.

Does anyone have any leads for me?

Thanks,

Roberta

There is one Bernt Jakobsen of the appropriate age in Lista, Vest-Agder at the time of the 1865 census. He is living with his mother and step-father also with several siblings -

If I were you I'd carefully study the parish birth/baptismal records for Lista. That would indicate the parentage of boys born in that time period.

Nope, that one doesn't look right. I'm looking for Bernt Pederson, son of Peder Jacobson (per his death certificate). The Flekkefjord Historielage of the Vest-Agder area could find no record of him being born in Brekne or the Vest-Agder area in their database of all the censuses, bygdeboks, etc. They believe he and his dad moved into that area from another area even though my family sources seemed to think he was born in Brekne. I am looking for a contact that may have the right information in another area, or something the historical society has overlooked. The only record they had found was his date of emigration, his marriage to my great-grandmother (Gesine Gabrielsdtr) who emigrated to Ishpeming, MI to marry him and that they had had one child. The only Peder Jakobsen they suspect may have been his father would have fathered him at the age of 65 as he was born in 1786 to Jakob Pedersen Meberg 1752 - 1834, who was m. in 1782 to Grete Marie Ottesdtr Torp 1756-1824 datter of Otte Nilsen 1728-1790 and Valborg Salvesdtr Torp 1724-1804.

Hi there is a Gesine Gabrielsd in the 1865 census living on the Brækne farm. Click Here Could that be where the connection to the Brekne farm came from??
If your Benjamin and Gesine lived in St Louis County Minnesota in the 1900 censu they had 7 children 6 living. Have you checked with the County Historical Society? Sometimes they have written histories on people

I have just about everything that can be found about Gesine - A Norwegian Historical Society sent me 100 pages of ancestors and I have a copy of the census you referenced. It is Benjamin's ancestors I'm looking for. I have the descendants in the United States pretty well under control - just a few censuses that are missing for children. My grandmother put together a history and lineage before she died so I had a lot to work with on the US side. It's Norway and Benjamin (or Barendt or Bernt) Pederson that we can't find any traces of farther back that what I have already stated.

There is another Jakob Pederson b. 1752 at Meberg farm.

His parents were Peder Andersen 1708-1777 and Torborg Kristoffersdtr d. 1739 57 yrs 9 mos. She was from a nearby farm called Kalleberg.

About the father Peder Anderson it is written: He lived first at Kalleberg, then at Frøyland farm, where most of the children were born. He moved to Meberg around 1760. In 1777 Jakob Pederson was at sea traveling from Holland when he died.
Maybe these "clues" will be helpful.

At Torp farm there was a man from KristiansandS named Anders Jakobsen and his wife named Hannah Marie Henriksdtr. They had several children born in KristiansandS. They sold their farm at Torp in 1857. The children are not named. I'm writing this as it maybe goes with the theory Roberta wrote about - that your gggrndfthr moved to Lista from somewhere else. The farm that Anders Jakobsen lived on was next to the farm that Grete Marie Ottesdtr (who was married to the Jakob Peterson you mentioned) inherited from her father. Maybe this is a connection.

Another possibility. In 1779 a Jakob Jacobsen was born at Brekne. His mother was Anne Dortea Torgrimsdtr and his father was "a foreign sailor named Jacob Jacobsen." This will be difficult to follow-up on because Anne Dortea's parents Torgrim Nilsen and Gurnhild Olsdtr never owned land, they lived on a "hussmansplass." And of course the father is identified as "a foreigner."

And yes, I've read that Gesine Gabrielsdtr b 1862 at Brekne "reiste til Amerika i 1882." I assume you know the information about her parents and grandparents, etc. It's all available in Listaboka.

By the way, in looking through Listaboka I have found several 60+ year old husbands with 35 year old brides having babies.

I'm sorry. This is an old posting. The Flekkefjord Historical Society made the connection on Bernt Martin Pederson probably at the end of 2005 and sent me an ancestors report back to the 1600's. I have been busy with other family branches including the descendants of this family and have not verified it as yet. Here is the immediate line for them:

Bernt Martin PEDERSEN Sæle (23743) was born on 7 Jun 1851 at Sæle Gr.4, matr.3., Hidra, Vest Agder, Norway. He was christened on 22 Jun 1851 at Hidra. He appeared on the census of 1865 at Sæle Matr.3, Hidra. He appeared on the census of 1875 at Sæle. He married Gesine Gabrielsdtr Brekne (), daughter of Gabriel EVERTSEN Brekne and Janniken BERNTSDTR Eie.

Gesine Gabrielsdtr Brekne was born on 22 May 1862 at Brekne Br.9, Lista, Vest Agder, Norway. She married Bernt Martin PEDERSEN Sæle, son of Peder SALVESEN Lund and Anne Elene HENRIKSDTR Haugland. Her married name was PEDERSEN U.S.A.. She died on 27 Aug 1944 at Tower, MN, U.S.A, at age 82.

The mix-up occured on Bernt's death certificate. He had one sister that was not following tradition in using her maiden name - she was going by her married name Jacobsen instead of Pedersdr - and that was somehow then remembered as his father's name.

I believe I have all the ancestors of this family now. Thank you for trying to help. If anyone is a descendant of this family or researching descendants, I would be happy to exchange information.

Roberta

Hidra is a beautiful island. My grandfather grew-up there, at Reistad. He emigrated to Bay Ridge, Brooklyn where he met and married my grandmother who was from Tjørve, right next to Brekne. Small world.
Glad you found the information you were looking for.
