If he left Norway when he was 3 years old I'd assume at least one of his parents came with him. Where have you found him (and family) in US censuses? Did the info on those censuses verify his emigration date?
Were other spellings of the name(s) used in US censuses or other records of the community where he/they lived? I don't find any persons in Norway for the 1865 census there using a surname like 'Lewis' so they must have adapted their original Norwegian name(s).

Be sure to do all the US research you can on his early life and family possible - you'll need all the clues you can find to possibly link to his original Norwegian birth place and therefore the earlier family records.

Hi, many perhaps, but namechanging can sometimes be very difficult to sort out.
Lewis is not Norwegian, it was likely changed from Lars or Lauritz, his fathers last name seems to have been Larsen /Lauritsen in Norway.
It also seems to me his fathers first name could have been been changed to Harry after he came to USA, not so safe concerning Harry.
