Amazed at the wonderful sharings here about Churches ... wondering if anyone has knowledge of how to find out in which Trondheim church my GGfather built the stained glass windows. His name is Peder Johnson, and there is a painting of the church fathers, along with GGfather, at the back of the church, along with a scroll with his name engraved on it because of his stained glass work in the church. Not much to go on, I know. We have no idea of the time-frame in which he did the work, in 1965 Census his info was: Skoledistrikt Ritsen, Sogn Risen, Prestegjeld Stadsbygd, Gardsnavn Nostbraettingen, b. abt 1828, d. 1885. A now-deceased grandson actually saw the painting of his grandfather hanging in the church, and his name engraved on the scroll, so isn't just family lore. Unfortunately, no details were written down and are now lost. Cousin has upcoming trip to Norway in May, wants to visit and document for rest of family. She is trying through government office somehow, but no luck yet. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated ... (I'm aware there could hardly be any vaguer clues ... a Johnson, a church!!) |

No, I don't know anything more, unfortunately. I called family members this evening of the descendents of the only relative (deceased) who has actually seen the oil painting of the church fathers and Peder Johnson, and the scroll with his name carved on it. I was looking for any other scraps of information, but no luck. Pictures were not allowed to be taken it seems, so no luck there either. Am hoping perhaps your neighbor will discover something in his history notes that might give a clue we can follow up on. I did learn something else in the phone calls ... an 85-year old granddaughter (my father's cousin) says that Peder was also a tailor. (I doubt that will help in this search, but it is new info ...) |

I think we will solve this problem soon, it shold not be too hard to trace. I'll make a few phonecalls to people in the church system. |

In researching to try to find the Church that Peder Johnsen created the stained glass windows in, I ran across a possibility, a church that was being built during the last years of his life. He died in Jan 1866, and the church was dedicated in 1889, assumedly after a period of several years in the building process? "Ilen church is located in the eastern part of central Trondheim, between the Nidelven river and the Trondheim fiord. The building was designed by the architect Eugene Sissenére in neo-gothic style, built of stone with wooden ceiling and was consecrated June 7. 1889." Have been unable to locate further information on it ... does anyone have any suggestions for pursuing the history of the building of this church, who/what one might direct an inquiry to? Thanks ... |

CORRECTION: I mistyped Peder Johnsen's death date ... the correct date is Jan 1886, and the church was dedicated in 1889. Could find no information on how long the building process was. |

NEW CLUE as the Church in Tronheim we are looking for:
The Church is built into the side of a hill in Trondheim.
Anyone know of a Church in Tronheim that is built into the side of a hill? Would really appreciate any help here as the trip to Norway is Tuesday! Thanks for any assistance anyone might be able to give! |

I believe that the Ilen church is too young, as Peder Johnson died in 1885, and the Ilen church was built later. |

It is not Bakke Kirke or Havstein Kirke, as I have spoken to the people there. |
