I found this on a website that has my great grandfather in their bygdebok. Could someone be so kind to translate it for me? Thank you!

Ole sailed in foreign trade, and a letter from him to his brother dated June 17th 1875 has survived from when Ole was on the ship Vestalindene, mastered by Capt. T. Johansen. It was obviously a long time since he had received any letters, and he starts his letter by complaining about waiting a long time without having any letters from his brother. He was very bored aboard the ship, and complains again with some bitterness about not getting any letters.
The letter is written while ha was in Russia, where the ship was loading to depart for London. He tells that the 14 days voyage through the arctic sea was hard, and that they had ice 30 - 40 feet thick, and the weather was so cold they could easy freeze to death. He does not know where he will be going next, but talks about maybe getting a load [from London] to the Baltic sea if they are lucky and then it would not take too long before coming home. |

If you know in what port the ship belonged you could write to the nearest maritime museum. Below are addresses for the museums in Oslo, Stavanger and Bergen, which are the mayor ones where you would have the best chance
Oslo (Christiania/Kristiania): Norsk Sjøfartsmuseum Bygdøynesveien 37 0286 Oslo NORWAY
Stavanger: Stavanger Sjøfartsmuseum Musegt. 16 N-4010 Stavanger NORWAY e-mail: firmapost@stavanger.museum.no http://www.stavanger.museum.no/
Bergen: Bergens Sjøfartsmuseum Postboks 2736- Møhlenpris 5026 Bergen NORWAY
Remember to include as much details as you can find about the ship, such as the year of sailing and name of captain.
