I am searching my grandfathers place of birth. He was born in Sweden in 1873. He was a blacksmith by trade and was called to work in the shipyards in Narik Norway. I do not know when he left sweden or anything about his family. Other than on his death certificate my mother had the name Sodermenland. I am not sure of that spelling. Can anyone out there tell me how to start a search for this line in my family history. I do not know if he had any brother;s or sisters. Probably left Sweden around 1895. He married my grandmother who was from Narvik Norway somewhere around 1899-1902. My mother was first born in april 1903

You have had prior postings on this family and have gotten help and advice. First, you must find out all you can about the family in Norway, including marriage records, baptismal records on ALL the children, the moving out records when they left for Canada, you know the dates.

The Narvik microfilm church records can be rented at a local Family History Center or on interlibrary loan:

These are not hard to read, a few basic words to learn, they are not narratives. Karl's place of birth in Sweden and his parents names would most likely be in those records.

Not everything is on the Internet. I have been doing this for over 30 years and haven't found everyone yet.

Hi,
I see that you've found this in another posting, but there might be some relevant about the emigration, so I put it up here as well!

Blacksmith Karl Gustaf Olsson, born 1873, residence = Bollnæs, Gæfleb., is emigrating to Revelstoke, B. C. on May 11th, 1911. He is married, and his residence "Bollnæs, Gæfleb." is most likely Bollnäs in Gävleborg county, Sweden.

Your other folks:
Oline Birgitte Olsson, married, born 1881. Note says: "To her husband" :-)
Nelly Olsson, born 1903
Karl Olaf Olsson, born 1906
Arvid Ragnar Olsson, born 1908
Alf Otto Olsson, born 1910

Date of emigration: April 24th, 1912.
Residence = "Liland"
Occupation: Blacksmith (on all!)
Destination Revelstoke, B. C.
Port of Emigration: Trondheim, Norway

click here for the emigration records.

Sodermenland sounds like it could be the swedish county Södermanland, just south of Stockholm.
Bollnäs in Gävleborg county is north of Stockholm.

Maybe you should do some search around that area?
Census 1890 for Sweden, for example. However, those two counties are not available for free, but through payment.

The first map shows swedish "landscapes", the second one (to the right) shows swedish counties, "län".

Hi,
Oline and her children have the Residence = "Liland" when they emigrate in 1912.

Have you figured out where that is?
I believe it must be Liland in Evenes muncipality, Nordland, just outside Narvik!

Once again thank you for you information I wondered where "Liland was but I did know that my mother Nelly was born in Narvik. I am also wondering where Oline Jansen and Karl Olsson were married. I suspect it is close to that area. Thank you once again.
