Do you have any names or dates? There is one Langwick, born in Norway, living in New York, in the 1910 census
LANGWICK BENJAMIN 23 M W NORW NY ULSTER 2-WD NEW PALTZ he emigrated in 1906
Finding them in the census would give you the date of emigration. The Digitalarkivet Click Here has Norwegian census, emigration records plus much more.

Hi,
Lisleby is east of Fredrikstad, Østfold, Norway, and possible ports of emigration would be Fredrikstad or Oslo.
The is noone by the name of Langvik/Langvig in the database from Fredrikstad, but 7 records in the Oslo database:

- 1906 Aug. 17 - Nils Langvik, male, married, clerk, 42, residence Glemminge, dest New York, ship Oslo
- 1906 Sep. 07 - Olaf Benny Langvig, male, unmarried, clerk, 20, residence Glemminge, dest. New York, ship Hellig Olav

Glemminge is now called Glemmen, and is an area in Fredrikstad, Østfold. Very close to Lisleby! 
This "Benjamin Langwick" which Carla found in New York 1910, is prob. Olaf Benny Langvig from Glemminge (Fredrikstad, Østfold)
Here is Benny living with his family (also sister Jørga Elise) on the farm Torp in Glemminge in census 1900, click here

| Thanks, after checking with family it seems to make sense that Olaf Benny Langvik, not Langvig would have been my great grand-father, on old photos and what not he went by the name Benny when he came to the United States and Jorga Elise Langvik was his sister or known as aunt Margret. So, Thanks I guess I now see what info I can find in and about Glemmen. |

Hi
Langvig and Langvik means the same in Norway, it can be translated into "Long Bay".
Langvig is an older way of writting it, ...vik is more modern. But Benny could very well have written his name Langvig, especially in his early years.
And for instance, you can very well find two brothers spelling their lastname differently, depending mostly on their preference, but it could also be depending on the person who wrote it down...
But on the other side, it's written "Benny Langvik" in the Ellis Island records, so the "g" could be a typo from when he signed in at Oslo Harbour.
Btw, his destination in 1906 was 218 Hamilton Ave., Brooklyn, N.Y., to his brother-in-law Mr. Harald Arnfindsen(?).
Jørga Langvik mention her father "Jørg Langvik in Lisleby" as her closest relative when arriving Ellis Islands in 1910. Her destination is brother Benny Langvik in New Paltz, N.Y.

My greatgrandfather, Nils Langvik, was the brother of Benny's father Jørgen Langvik b. 1857. My grandmother, Mary Langvik, was hence the 1. cousin of Olaf Benny Langvik. Both Benny and Nils emigrated to the USA in 1906.
Jørgen and Nils's parents were:
Ole Petter Andersen Langvik b. 1820, d. 1916, and his wife:
Maren Engebretsdatter b. 1830.
They both came from farms around 5 miles from the town of Fredrikstad.
Ole Petter grew up on a farm named Langvik near the town of Fredrikstad.
Benny had 2 uncles in USA. Nils and Johan Langvik who both lived in Chicago. Johan arrived in the USA in 1884 and changed his name to John Langwick . He was probably married to Petra Langwick, also a Norwegian. His brother Nils arrived in 1906. Nils left his wife and 5 children behind in Norway in order to pursue a better life in USA. Nils is buried at Oakwoods Cemetery in Chicago and passed away in Dec. 1907. His plan was probably that the rest of his family should go to Chicago at a later stage.
The grave and tombstone of Maren and Ole Petter Langvik can still be seen in Lisleby "Old" Cemetery just outside Fredrikstad in Norway.

If you follow the link above from the cencus of 1865, the person number 5 on the list is Jørgen Ols. (en). He is the son of Ole Petter Andersen Langvik. He later was known as Jørgen Langvik and was the father of Benny. Number 3 on the list is Johan and number 7 is Nils. The two brothers who immigrated to Chicago.
In 1865 the family owned the farm , "Nøkleby Østre" in Lisleby just outside Fredrikstad.
So, the parents of Benny were Jørgen and Elise Langvik. His grandparents on his father's side were: Ole Petter Andersen Langvik and Maren Engebretsdatter Langvik.
Ole Petter grew up on farm named Langvik and Maren on a farm named Løkka. Both these farms were parts of Thorsø Estate.

The Ministerialbook for Glemmen, year 1886:
Nr. 123 on the list is Olaf Benny. He was born , July18, 1886 and Christened on August 15, 1886.
His parents: Jørgen Langvig and wife
Elise Sofie Berntsdatter (Langvik ).
Jørgen was a clerk at Lisleby fabrikk, probably a Sawmill.
Jørgen Langvik died : 01 february 1940 and was buried at Leie gravlund (Leie Cemetery ) ,Fredrikstad, Glemmen.
Elise Langvik died : 01July 1929 and was also buried at Leie gravlund , Fredrikstad , Glemmen.
Rolf Langvik, b. 1897, a brother of Benny, died 22 June 1965 and is also buried at Leie Cemetery.

I apologize for my second post. It was obviously a mistake - a copy of my first.
From my brothers, I now have some additional information about the Benny Langvik family.
1. Before Benny moved to New Paltz, he washed dished in NYC someplace. His pay consisted of meals.
2. John Langwick had 3 girls, not 4.
3. David married Helen Elizabeth Crooks. They are now retired teachers of romance languages. Their daughter Rebecca now teaches French. Rebecca's husband is from Miramas, France, near Aix. Their daughter's name is spelled Marian.
4. Ralph's children were both adopted.
5. I am not certain if Kaaren, Charles' eldest daughter, is in fact deceased. Must check.
I am sure more additions and corrections will be forthcoming.

Thank you for so much information about the Langwick family in the US and especially the detailed story about Benny.
As have some knowledge of John Langwick in Chicago I can add :
John Langwick ( original name : Johan Langvik ) arrived in the USA in 1883. His wife Petra followed i 1886. In the Cencus of 1920 John and Petra had a son William, aged 30 and a daughter Inga age 36 living with their parents.
In the 1930 Cencus there were John, Inga and William. They were all living at the same address in Chicago. One may assume that William and Inga never got married.
Margareth came to live in New Paltz in 1946. She was born in the Lisleby area near Fredrikstad in Southern Norway, Sept. 29, 1883. She passed away in Jan. 1964.
In Norway the Langvik- branch consist of many descendents of Ole Petter Andersen Langvik and his wife Maren Engebretsdatter. They had a number of children among those were John, Nils, Anne and Jørgen.
Jørgen was the father of Benny.
Nils was a teacher . He was born 1864 and was teaching for many years in the town of Larvik in Southern Norway. He had 5 children and many of his descendent still live in the Larvik area. He left his family and emigrated to Chicago and his brother John in 1906. He was preparing for his family to follow, but he passed away already in 1907.
From the Norwegian 1900- cencus:

Elise Langvik hm g alm. huslig gjerning og landhandlerske 1860 Fredriksstad
Margith Langvik d ug datter 1884 Glemminge Sm

Sverre Langvik s ug søn 1893 Glemminge Sm
Rolf Langvik s ug søn 1897 Glemminge Sm
So Benny had 5 siblings. Among them Sverre born 1893 and Jørga Elise born 1889. She arrived in NY in 1910 to visit Benny. Did she stay? Sverre arrived in NY in 1911.
The reason I am so interested is that my greatgrandfather was Nils Langvik.
The name Langvik is due to the fact that Ole Andersen Langvik grew up on a farm named Langvik outside Fredrikstad, Norway. The farmhouses are still there and I visited the farm recently.
