Lars Fredriksen Monseth was born October 1st 1872 to Elen Larsdatter Asbølmo, Orkdal, Norway and Fredrik Fredriksen Rø, Hølonda (now Melhus), Norway. The parents were not married. His mother later (in 1878) married Løden Andersen Melby from Skaun, and since they settled at the cotter place "Hesthaugen" under one of the Monset farms, they took the family name Monseth (sometimes written with an h, sometimes not).

As far as I can tell, Lars grew up at her mother's and stepfather's cotter place at Hesthaugen, Monset in Orkdal. Some details about his school days and confirmation ceremony in 1887 supports that.

In 1895 he left for Minneapolis, Minnesota. The date March 13th 1895 I guess is the date for departure from Trondheim. "The Berlin" left Southampton, and arrived at Ellis Island April 2nd 1895.

In 1932 he writes my great grandmother's brother, saying that he has a farm, is married, and has one son, four daughters. He is concerned about his farm, since the son is going to a seminary, going to be a minister, so he won't take over the farm, and two of the daughters are married, and two are teachers.

So to my problem: Since there are many providers of census information and so on, I wonder if there are anyone who can find information about this man and his family. My provider can't find any Monseth in Minnesota, which is NOT true.

Are there anyone of you who can find information about Lars F. Monseth in Minnesota?

You can read more about Lars here (in Norwegian), together with the scanned letter: http://www.monset.slektssider.org/nedlastingsdokumenter/Lars%20Fredriksen%20Monseth.pdf

For more information about the cotter place Hesthaugen, you can look here (also in Norwegian): http://www.monset.slektssider.org/nedlastingsdokumenter/Hesthaugen.pdf

The main page for my web cite for family history and farm history concerning the Monset farms and the Monset school district in Orkdal is here: http://www.monset.slektssider.org/index.htm

I am also interested in information on his half brother Anders Lødensen/Lønsen Monseth, born July 15th 1880 in Orkdal. He was of course also from this place Hesthaugen, born to Løden/Løn Andersen Monseth (formerly Melby) and Elen Larsdatter Asbømo. He came to Minneapolis in 1903. He was certainly still there in 1923, when my grandfather visited him on his way to Tacoma. Anders L. Monseth then had a car, and when my grandfather was leaving for Tacoma, Anders and his son Lorentz drove my grandfather to the train station, my grandfather wrote in one of his letters home to my grandmother.

Lars' son Fritjof did become a minister but was involved in some kind of legal hassle in the late 1960s. If you search in the historical newspaper section of www.genealogybank.com you can catch snippets of the action mentioned in the Aberdeen South Dakota newspaper.

Thanks to all of you! Of course Familysearch is better than the cites I am paying for! :)

I will use this more in the future. I am currently trying to collect more information about people from the valley where Lars and Andrew (Anders) came from, Orkdal. I want to learn more about the people who left for the USA before my grandfather Ingebrigt Monset (1891-1982) and his brothers Anders Monseth (1885-1963) and Ole Monseth (1899-1987).

Ingebrigt - lumberjack in Washington 1923-1928. His contact coming to the USA was Andrew Monseth (1880-1936)
Anders - sawmill worker in Tacoma 1909-1953
Ole - gold mine worker in Vancouver B.C. 1929-1936

These three all came back, but somebody contributed to their dreams before they went "over there"...

Some information has been collected in a book on emigration from Orkdal, but I am sure there is more to be found...

So, Familysearch then.... Of course! Thanks!
