I have recently taken on the search of my Mother-in-laws heritage and it has been very rough going. While she was still alive she had begun to find some information but it is not in a clear format.
Her father possible went by several names in this order: Peter Kyllo Andrew Kyllo Andrew Even Swenson
Andrews father, grandfather and uncle were: Arnt Kyllo Peter Kyllo Peter Kyllo
Mother was Nikkolina Andersdotter Neilsen Kortegard
I believe Nikkolina came to US from Christiana (place ?) sometime between 1882 - 1885. Basing this on the fact that her first husband died about 1882 and she gave birth to Andrew 1886.
I am acquiring Andrews birth certificate to see if there is anything else to assist but in the meantime..
Suggestions on how and where to begin. So many of the databases I find on the internet for Norway are mind boggling.

More information would be helpful. What was your Mother-in-laws name, when was she born? Where did she settle in North America. Who did she marry? Have you found in her census? Did her parents immigrate with her? |

The census record from Bolsoy Municipality is the correct family. Thank you so much. I spent four hours trying to do searches and kept getting frustrated.
Now for additional clarification on what I posted earlier. Marion Swenson (my mother-in-law) was born in Portland Oregon US in 1921. Her mother died a few days after giving birth to Marion. Marions father was so overwhelmed with the loss of his wife and four other small children at home that he allowed the Nurse (name was Pearl) at the hospital to take Marion home with her. Pearl and her partner Levi raised Marion for about 13 years. At this time Pearl died of cancer and the sister of Marions biological father took Levi to court and took Marion away from him.
Marions parents were listed as Andrew E Swenson and Edna B Young. The Young family is not a problem tracing but the Swenson line has been an uphill climb just in the short amount of time I have attempted. My father in law recently passed away and when going through his possessions I found a few stray pages of notes taken by Marion, before she passed away, uncovering part of her fathers history.
From what I gather his father is Arnt Peterson Kyllo (born 29 aug 1852) and his mother is Nikkolina Andersdatter - Neilsen - Kortegard - Kyllo. Arnt and Nikkolina both had spouses in Norway that passed away. Arnt left his first wife and kids behind in Norway when he came to America. When Arnt's wife passed away the kids were placed in orphanage. One child was named Jonas Kyllo. Nikkolina was married to Hans Kortegard who died abt 1882. I believe she brought her two children (Andrew Hansen Koretegard born 1879 & Johanna Helga Koretegard born 1882) with her when she came to America to marry Arnt.
Arnt's father was named Peter Kyllo. Peter Kyllo had four sons; Arnt, Peter, Ole, Sivert. Arnt and Peter married sisters. Not sure if this was Arnt's first wife or his second.
I have notes where Andrew Swenson was formally known as Peter Kyllo. And another note shows "Andrew E (swenson) Kyllo".
Andrew was born 1886 in Goodhue County, Minnesota US, and his siblings were born in North Dakota US and then everyone settled in Multnomah County, Oregon US. Everyone connected to Andrew apparently kept the Kyllo name but he switched to Swenson. |

I appreciate all the help from everyone. I have spent the last two days going over all the suggested reading.
I have been playing with the census for Norway 1875, so far, without any luck. I first tried doing a search in 1875 using Arn% for Førename and Stj% for the Fødestad. No luck. Also tried the same search for Ped%, Ber%, Siv%, or Tom% using wildcard on their Førename search as well. I also used Øvr% for the Fødestad with no luck.
Should I not use a Fødestad search? Do the Fødestad not usually agree from census to census? |

Unfortuately, the 1875 census online is not complete, Stjørdal is not included.
The 1875 microfilms films are, however, available for rental at a local Family History Center. |

I take that back, parts of Stjørdal are online for the 1875 census, but not Hegra. |

It sure is a challenge trying to search through the records. I do appreciate all the help. I am getting the hang of using the folketellinger.
Is there any cemetery or death records available online?
And what about Orphanage records from back in late 1800's?

Yes that is Andrew, I am still waiting for death record and the record from Social Security Death Index. One has cashed my check and the other has not. So hopefully one of the records will be arriving in the next week or two. The wait is frustrating. The more I dig the more I wonder if he was not an orphan taken in by the Kyllo family. If that is the case I may be in for a losing battle in searching the history.
There is a U.S. census record that shows an Andrew that is possible mine living in a School for orphans. The next census shows him in another school with Nikkolina Kyllo and one of her daughters. The Andrew is listed on a different page from Nikkolina though. But is seems strange that Nikkolina and one child was listed in a school when the rest of the kids and the father Arnt was listed in a residence in a different state. |

Hopefully the following information will be helpful to you. I have the Band V, Stjørdalboka which covers the Hegra Herad. On pages 365 and 366 under the Kyllo farm there is the Husmannsplas Faldgrinden under gr.nr 30, 2. The farmer on this husmannsplass is: Peder Olsen Ydtsi, born April 25, 1822 and died December 18, 1907. Var ei tid eigar av Florbekken unter gr.nr. 129. Gift October 22, 1846 m. Beret Paulsdatter Dalsaunet, born May 11, 1816 and died October 27, 1891. Children: Ole, born January 23, 1847. Gift i Meråker. Reiste til Amerika? Peter, born June 14, 1849. Reiste til Amerika. Sivert, August 10, 1851. Reiste til Amerika. Arnt, born August 10, 1853. Busset på Florbekken, gift m. Marit Johnsdatter., who died November 20, 1880. Etter at kona var død, reiste Arnt til Amerika. Arnt or Marit hadde 3 born, mellom dei Jonas Kyllo, som vart oppfostra på Faldgrinda. Jonas Kyllo er smed i Kopperå. Thomas born September 17, 1857. |

There were (and still are ) many Kyllos living in and around Goodhue County, Minnesota. Perhaps some are connected to your Kyllo family.
Check out John Dalby's free database (thousands of southern MN cemetery burials, county histories, news articles, etc.) http://www.dalbydata.com/user.php?action=cemsearch

Hi ! My name is Stacey Kyllo. I am the great grandaughter of Art Kyllo who was son of Peter Kyllo, son of Sivert Kyllo. I wondered what you found out about your family line. Very interesting. Would love to know more. |
