We are trying to do my husbands family tree and we haven't got any idea of how to start. We think that there were name changes and we also don't know when they left Norway. His grandfather's name was Einar Rognstad (or possibly Amundson) and he came to America as a young child. He traveled with his mother only. Where do you suggest I start? Any ideas would be wonderful!!! Thanks- Rognstad

You can't have absolutely no idea. Before/after 1900, before/after 1880.
Probably you know approximately when he was born. Anything more than what you have given us yet.

According to the book about norwegian farms there are 6 farms called Rognstad. In the 1900 census there are more than 10,000 men called Einar. And plenty of them was son of an Amund. But no Rognstad, and as far as I can see no Einar Amundsen on any of the Rognstad farms. But if he left before 1900 there shouldn't be. I can't do the same searches on all cencuses so please: more information.

By the way - the six farms are located in Hedemark, Brandbu, Vardal, Vestre Toten, Østre Toten and Øier if you'll have a go on your own...

Lynn;

it could be this one:http://da2.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=7&filnamn=emikra1&gardpostnr=185063&merk=185063#ovre

If you think it's the right one I'll try to trace his family in Brandbu; Oppland CO.

I'm living not so far away
