I'm looking for information on my grandmother's family. Maria Nelson (Nielsen) immigrated from Norway in 1904 at age 16. Her parents were Nels Nelson and Kaea (?) Helena Bjork Nelson. Siblings included brothers Louis Nelson, Karl Nelson, Nels Nelson (immigrated to Brooklyn, NY late 1890s, early 1900s - drowned in Sheepshead Bay, NY), and sisters Nellie (married to John Thompson - they had one son John Jr - father and son drowned in Sheepshead Bay, Ny), and Josephine (her identical twin, married name Snieg). Maria (or Marie as she was known) married Joseph Toterhi in Yonkers NY between 1910 and 1920. They had three children, Mary, Thomas and Helen. Any info would be appreciated.

Per the Ellis Island database, Marie Nielsen, age 16 from Hiso Sogn, Norway arrived at the Port of New York on September 19, 1904 on the SS United States from Christiansund. Destination was brother Niels Nielsen at 60 Cole St., Brooklyn. Passage was paid by her father.

Hiso is an island off of Arendal in Aust-Agder.

Sheepshead Bay is in Brooklyn, Kings County, NY. Here is a free online New York City death index for 1891-1936, you should be able to find some of them on this site, it will provide information on ordering death certificates.
