The bridegroom lived in Skien in 1900 census: Halvor Serigstad (1896)
The bride was born in Farsund: Rense Køhn
The father of the bridegroom was from the farm Serigstad in Time parish, Rogaland county. Norwegian surnames were established about 1900, and people from rural areas took in use the farm names as family surnames. Before 1850-1900 the farm name was more like an address. When they moved on to a new farm they changed "surname". More important was the patronymic surname, which was an unchangeable fact. |

If you click on "Instructions" in the upper left hand corner you will find explanations and help.
Here is a good dictionary for reading the old records:

There is a bit more information in Digitalarkivet: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f00806&gardpostnr=925#nedre
!! Edvards.* m b s ug Møllearbeiders søn 24.08.1900 t n s udøbt gut
The last words means "unbaptized boy". Edvardsen, a son of the miller, born Aug 24th 1900, has no given name because he is not yet baptized. !! is a note made by the person that made the digital version of the census. It means that it is like that in the original document, the given name column is empty. |
