Anybody

I've been searching the passenger lists in 1869 +- , looking for ancestors Ellingsen and Jacobsen leaving Stavanger. Have found others I am related to, but not these. Can anybody give me new direction?

The Stavanger emigration records for years before 1929 were destroyed in a fire. "Utvandrersenteret" in Stavanger is trying to reconstruct some of the lists from other sources.

If you are really determined to try to find information about emigration/immigration you could organize your research into the ARRIVAL end of the trip or look for possible "leaving the parish" record(s) in the church records of the congregation where your ancestors had been members before they emigrated.

Hi,
there are 624 people named something like Ellingsen in the list of Emigrants fra Stavanger 1825-1970, so I think you need to provide some more information...

First name? Age? Year of emigration? Destination (State/City)?

Note: The list of Emigrants fra Stavanger 1825-1970 are not complete. The original records were destroyed in an fire, so this database is a "reconstruction" based on letters, churchbooks, bygdebooks, newspaper-articles, obituaries etc

okay

I agree, church records would be a good way to go. I have this family located in the 1865 Census, living in Hetland, Rogaland, how would I find their church?

Hi,
there are several churches in the area, so it's depending on the location of the farm.

Most likely you should find them in the churchbooks from Stavanger Domkirke, ie. the Stavanger Cathedral.

Please share the URL link to your family from the 1865 Norwegian census with us here. You have fairly solid evidence that WHICH members of the family left from Stavanger about 1869? Where did they emigrate to? Where did they live?

The church records from the Stavanger Domkirke that I have used have been quite beautiful, the handwriting and organization of details absolutely wonderful. An excellent resource to look for the church/church records is to use the LDS Family History Library catalog - I entered a Place Search in that catalog for Hetland, clicked on what it has for 'church records' in Hetland and part of the description included "Contains priest and sexton records from the parishes Hetland (Frue), Riska (Riskekverven) and Randaberg (Randeberg). They were separated from the combined Stavanger clerical district in 1849. Earlier church records are in the Cathedral church parish (Domkirken) in Stavanger city. Riskekverven (Riska) was separated from Frue and became its own parish in 1877." The LDS library collection has 13 reels of microfilm which duplicates the Hetland church records from 1760-1948.
I have done research in those areas for my own family for quite some time - but without knowing more exact details about the WHO, WHEN and WHERE of those you desire to research - I cannot determine if I might already have any materials available which could be of help.

to finish answering your questions. This whole family eventually all moved. Enoch and Tobias (sons) were the first, then the parents and remaing family came a bit later, but not all at the same time. They all first settled in chicago, then when land opened in No dakota, they slowly all moved out there buying land from the railroad and homesteading. Daughter Ane settled in Crow Wing Co MN. Brigette, married and never left

I am going to pursue the LDS suggestions also. Someone in the family at some time has used the LDS records tracing these folks back even farther. But the story I am writing is about the migration

I have to assume that you want to know how to obtain the LDS microfilm copies of the Stavanger Domkirken church records not locate the physical building of that church within the city of Stavanger as your question states - study this -
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/na20.html

But the family you seek was residing in Frue parish of Hetland clerical district in 1865, according to the census link you forwarded and that parish had separated from the Domkirke in 1849 as clarified earlier. It is POSSIBLE that the family may have chosen to attend church services at a greater distance from their residence as lodgers in the home of the farmer/carpenter O. Knudsen but we've seen nothing to prove that. If they left Norway very soon after that census I would think it more reasonable for you to check in the church records of Hetland first. (Check the link that Jo Ann gave you earlier above.)

H

I am actually looking for the church so I can confirm their true location. The microfish is necessary to do that. I have noted JoAnne's suggestions and will be trying to locate the closes LDS Church, to order the film. With you comments, can I assume Hetland is within Stavanger city limits?

LDS Family History Library catalog indicated two church books for the Stavanger Domkirke of notations of "utflyttede" (leaving the parish) which include the year 1869. One of those two - Book nr. 12 (Kyrkjebok for presten) is copied to LDS microfilm #0307144. I've used that film for other research purposes so I checked that film today and there is NO member of the Ellingsen/Jacobsen family listed in that book's entries of "utflyttede" for the year 1869.

Jo Anne - thanks for the links to the nice photos of old Vår Frue Kirke (Hetland). I especially enjoyed the explanation of the location of the church in relationship to the parish. They explained that situation quite clearly.

Thank you for the sites and comments, I see another Hetland, across the bay near Ardal. How are we able to determine which Hetland we are talking about? As you can see in the 1865 census, everyone was born in Hoiland, . The municipality # is 1126, is that the clue?

That was my doubt as well, are we looking at the right farm?

So I checked the neighbours to Jacob Ellingsen, and one of the closest neighbours is parish priest Magnus Gjør! He also lives on the Hetland farm, on what must be the houses belonging to Hetland church.

It's the same schooldistrict, same parish, same farm, same farmnumber etc.., so these two farms are in the same area.

These Hetland farms were situated in what is now downtown Stavanger, only a few 100 meters from the Stavanger Catheral.
The Stavanger Cathedral is located in the "grey area" you see just above the Breiavatnet lake, and the Hetland farms must have been situated around the Hetland church (Vår Frue Kirke).

Høyland parish is located in Sandnes, just south of Stavanger/Hetland.

Marta Jorine Jakobsen, birth: 20 MAR 1855 Sviland, Hoyland, Rogaland, Norway
Isach Mardius Johansen, christening: 14 FEB 1858 Hoyland, Rogaland, Norway

This Isach christened in February 1858 probably died young (in 1861-62) since the Isak in the 1865 census is only 3 years old. He must have died after 1861, else I guess Ole would have been named Isak.
