Not easy to find the baptism records for the children of Ludvig and Maren. Here is one I found using the data provided by Jan Peter. This is for Martinius born in 1875 . Note the father was using the name Herman Ludvig Mathisen.
Marentius Mathisen in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927 Name: Marentius Mathisen Gender: Male Birth Date: 25 sep 1875 Baptism Date: 21 nov 1875 Baptism Place: Onso,Ostfold,Norway Father: Herman Ludvig Mathisen Mother: Maren Kristine Andreasdr

Hi vvassar, I can't access your links, so if my post seems not to reflect the information you provided, that is why.
That said, may I comment?
Regarding the first issue, you have also received research by others, in this thread, who currectly reside in Norway and can read the records - for example Jan Peter Wiborg. Your forum helpers need a more specific objection from your friend in order to examine it and reply.
About the second issue, yes it is confusing that the children on the Drammen are listed as children of Adam Iversen. However, that is a mistake. Suspecting as much, the forum researched Adam, found him in the census, found him in the 1865 census, found the births of his children. They aren't named Marenius, Herman, Severin, and Klara. He has been ruled out as father. So the young passengers are surname unknown. Their names and ages match the children of Herman Ludvig Mathisen, insofar as that's been checked, and he is named just above them on both ship manifests. Ergo, he is likely their father.
While maintaining a healthy scepticism and caution, you can continue onward with a working hypothesis that the correct parents for Severin and Klara have been found. This allows you to fill in the many many blanks with additional focused research, and the results will tell the tale. Likely the circumstantial evidence will continue to mount, supporting the hypothesis. Among the reasons is that these records, posted so far, echo the US public records and private family stories. |

I appreciate all of you being so patient with me. I've not run into such patience while working with research like this recently. I am going to attempt to get the documents I have been trying to show the forum served at a different location for all of you to see. Although I have my tree public on Ancestry, it is apparent that giving direct links to my data on Ancestry is not a good solution.
Thank you again for your assistance and patience as I blunder along in my research. |

Only those with a subscription to Ancestry can access your links. I happen to have one so I was able to comment on the information found in your two links.
I found the first three sentences of the paragraph on Grandma Westerdahl the most informative for this Forum. You might consider just typing them in so others on this Forum can also read the information. |

Of course.
"From Westerdahl Family History Document from ~1989
"Grandma Westerdahl was born Clara Elizabeth on October 23, 1880 in Tronheim, Norway to Ludwig Matheisson (mothers name unknown) and came to this country as a very young child with her father and a brother Severine. After their father died they were raised by separate Foster Parents and each taking the name of the foster parents, so Clara went by the name Ecklund and Severine went by the name of Graham. "

Article - April 13, 1962 - Iron River Reporter
"Mrs. Clara Westerdahl Dies at 82"
"Mrs. Clara Westerdahl, 82, of 31 West Boyington St., Iron River, passed away early Wednesday morning at the Stambaugh General Hospital following a short illness. She had been a patient at the hospital since Sunday. Mrs. Westerdahl was born Oct. 24, 1880 in Oslo, Norway, and came to this country at the age of two months with her parents, who settled in Escanaba. She came to this area 44 years ago and has been a resident of Iron River since that time."
So as you can see, the information has been manipulated (whether intentionally or not) here or there to fit whatever need she or my family saw fit. I have seen at least two different birth cities claimed for her, and this business that she came over with both parents as written in the obituary is flat out incorrect, possibly incorrect intentionally. |

Re: the academic author I mentioned earlier - he responded to me on twitter and gave me his email! I'm going to gather up as much info as we have here and see if he can help. Maybe he saw Maren in the records and tell us why she was in there. |

It looks like it is, you have a sharp eye. This is the Family grave for Kristian Mathiesen (no date) Maren Kristine Mathiesen buried Oct. 1. 1918. To be 100% sure, date of death and date of born is missing.
