Oluf H. Pederson was born 18 June 1864 in Huckelhustuen, Birid, Oppland, Norway. I have a date of 1878 for his emigration. I am not certain how to proceed on finding the ship and manifest for this ancestor.

Recommend you read the article on this site - Hunting Passenger Lists.

Look at the Index of Departures and the Arrivals on this site, you will see that they might have arrived in New York, Philadelphia or in Canada.

You need to find him in the police protocols on Digitalarkivet, it give the exact date of departure and most likely would give the shipping line, final destination. After you have this information you can research the routes and ports they took on this site also. Since he came from Oppland, Bergen would be a good place to start:

Hi,
where do you have his initial "H" from?

Could it be "K"?

The reason I ask, it that there is a record of one Ole Kristian Pedersen (18) from Birid, emigrating to Quebec on Oct. 20th, 1882: Link. He looks to be going together with brother Peder (11). Lastname, age and location fits, but then again; "Ole Pedersen" was quite a common name... it's almost like looking for Mr. John Doe in New York..

Here is Oluf on the farm Huskelhustuen in census 1865. Link

Huskelhus in Biri is just south of the Olympic city of Lillehammer, so the most likely port of emigration would be Christiania/Oslo. Travelling to Bergen from that area was quite a challenge, crossing the highest mountains in Norway, while down to Oslo it was "just" to follow the valley...

Thanks so much for this information....the census confirms my Pederson family in Birit...and it appears the emigration data
is my Ole and his brother Peder, Pederson....it has opened a window for me to do further research.
Best regards,

Hello, Ollufs mother Kari Jørgensdr was born in Ringsager(Ringsaker) Parish in Hedmark County. Birid (Biri) lies across Lake Mjøsa in Oppland county. No church records from Biri or Ringsaker for this period available on internet so fare. About 1,5 mill of total 4 miil pages are scanned.

Thank you for the information, it is always appreciated. Family history records show Oluf Pederson's mother as Sessel Jorgensdatter? I wonder if she and Kari could be sisters?

Best regards,
Bev in Oregon

Who is "Kari"??? Oluf's mother is as said above Sissel Jørgensdatter.

Here is Sissel/Cecilie's marriage record with Peder Arnesen on 10 JUL 1854, Biri, Oppland, Norway
Her father is Jørgen Nielsen.

Hi Jan: Thank YOU SO MUCH for this marriage date! I did mean to type Sissel....rather than Sessel!! I need to proofread my work prior to submitting it.

Hello Porter Motzau, you are right about Olluf´s mothers first name. Sorry ,I was wrong, Sissel Jørgensdatter born about 1833 in Ringsaker parish is correct.
