I'm looking for this family:

Pedersen, Augusta (age 44 in 1880) - mother, born in Norway
Pedersen, Pauline (born in 1861?) daughter, born in Norway
Pedersen, Bennett/Bernhardt (age 16 or 18 in 1880) son, born in Norway
Pedersen, Anna (age 13 in 1880) daughter, born in Norway

The mother is a widow in 1880.

I've been told them came from Bergen around 1866 or 1867. I'm not sure where they lived in Norway though.

I've tried searching on my own, but I'm not having much luck. I'm wondering if someone here can help me. Thanks!

Furthermore, in case it helps, there were 3 other children born later in Minnesota -- ages listed in 1880 as 8, 5, & 3.

In the 1880 census they are in the Cedar Creek Precinct, Clark County, Washington. Page 19A, starting on Line 12. Thanks! I have no clue where in MN they are from.

BTW, I found a Pauline Pedersen in Edoy, Norway in 1865. However, I don't believe this the correct family because the siblings and mother's age don't match. :/

But they are using the surname "Adesen"? You call them Pedersen, why? They used that name later or in other records? Did any of them choose to use other surnames?

I don't think it is "Adesen" when I look at that census. For example, compare the written "A" in the last name to the "A" in Augusta within the same line. The person writing this name doesn't make the two A's look at all alike.

I can't really make out that last name myself though when looking at it with my own eyes.

I've found plenty of census where what one transcribes is not what it is.

I saw what familysearch.org transcribed it as. If you look at a scanned picture of that census though, the first letter of their last name doesn't look like an A to me, especially when you compare it to the "A" in Augusta's name on the same line. With my eyes it looks like it could be a "P" instead.

The first family listed on that census page is this one: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/Census/household_record.asp?HOUSEHOLD_CODE=1880US_4489385&frompage=99

Familysearch.org transcribes them as Aelbeck. The "A" in that last name looks just like the "A" in Augusta's first name on the same page, too.

BTW, I searched for "Adesen" in 1865 here: http://www.rhd.uit.no/indexeng.html and don't find any at all in Norway.

What other US records do you find Augusta and/or her children in? Did you find Augusta or Pauline in Minnesota in 1870? What information did Pauline's marriage record and/or marriage license application give about her father/mother?
Was Augusta's husband ever in the Washington area - did you find a death or burial record for him? If she took her children all the way from Minnesota to Washington as a widow - was she travelling to meet with other family in that WA area?

Adesen isn't a spelling that we'd expect to find in Norway - but spelling in US records of Norwegian names can be drastically altered and misunderstood. 1860s emigration records from the port of Bergen in Norway are very very incomplete (they don't really start getting good until about 1874) - did you look for arrival records in American ports? But without knowing what name to look for - that will also be problematic.

Totally wrong years, and names, but just some name to show that Norway had some names that easily could be Adesen.

Pam, I found this family in the 1870 census in Paint Creek Township, Allamakee County, Iowa (Post office would be Waterville and Dalby)
Martin Pederson, Carpenter, age 34, Norway
Aagot (probably later Americanized to Augusta,) age 33
Pauline, age 9, Norway
Bernhard, age 7, Norway
Anna, age 4, Norway
Carl (or Earl) age 1, born Iowa
If she is a widow in 1880, then Martin must have died between 1870 and 1880.
P. S. My great-grandfather, Martin Larson, was listed as Matthias in the 1865 Norway census.

Thanks everyone for all this info. I'm helping a fellow family member trace their Peterson family line. Therefore, I personally don't know the answers to several of the questions being asked. I'll pass this info along to the person I'm assisting to see if the further clues mentioned here will help them further. I really appreciate everyone's time with this. You are great!! If I learn more info, I'll share, too.
