My brother is planning a trip to Norway in early June and wants as much information as possible about our ancestor Bernt Olsen (Dille) who was born Nov. 18, 1839 and died September 15, 1911. We think he was married to Marit T Glarius Olsen who was born on January 4, 1848 and died May 1, 1892. My brother particularly wants to know where in Norway Marit and Bernt were born and raised. |

Hi, you should provide some more information, if available...
- Any idea of when they emigrated?
- Did they meet or marry in the US?
- Any names of their children?
- What do you mean by "Dille"? Was he known by that name?

I think they married in Norway (though I'm really not sure about that). Dille might be a nickname (it was placed on a quick family tree that my mother made). Children were: Maurius Berhard Olsen (1875-1935) who was born in La Crosse. Wisconsin and Oscar Olsen, Bernhard M Olsen, Minnie Sinelser, Lydia Echart, and Hulda Bellin. I'm really not sure when they immigrated - some time before 1875.) |

Hi, according to the 1880 census for La Crosse, Wisconsin, their oldest son Oscar is also born in Wis., so emigration is 1873 or earlier. Link

A strong possibility among emigrants from Trondheim, Norway, on 06-MAY-1869:
Bernt Olsen, journeyman baker, male, 29, residence Kristiansund [Møre & Romsdal county], destination: Lansing, agent: Henriksen, ship: Damascus Marit Beraugsdatter Glærum, female, 22, from Surnadal [Møre & Romsdal county], dest: Lansing, agent: Henriksen, ship: Damascus link
Here she is in Kristiansund in census 1865: link She is born 04 JAN 1848. link Her parents are Berau Matthiasen & Gjertrud Toresdatter
Here is Bernt in census-1865 (occupation reads baker):link His birthplace reads Røros, and here is his christening record: link He is born on 18 Nov 1839! Parents are Ole Abrahamsen & Berith Tallevsdatter.
They must have been married in the US.

Ole Abrahamsen (22) Birth: <1814> Father: Abraham DILLE Bereth Tollefsdatter (40) Birth: <1796> Father: Tollef Erichsen. Marriage: 23 Jul 1836 Place: Røros, Sor-Trondelag, Norway. Notes: Wife previously married. Additional data in original record link
Here is her father named Tolleiv Jendersen ... Her birth says 1796 Vangen, Roros, Sor Trondelag, Norway. Death: 27 DEC 1839. So she died 1 month after giving birth to Bernt.

Probably Ole Abrahamsen's parents:
Marriage record, 30-MAY-1803 Abraham Olsen Dille & Anne Lisbeth Olsdatter Beintz link
The name Dille must come from a farm in Røros, but I haven't been able to locate it. However, there are still some people named Dille in the city, according to the local white pages
Marit's home farm is today called Glærem, and is located close to the township Surnadalsøra in Surnadal, Møre & Romsdal county.
Ole Abrahamsen Dille on the Haugene farm in Røros in census 1865. link Looks like he is re-married with one Maren Pedersdatter.

Both my brother and I are grateful and amazed with all the information you were able to come up with in such a short time. He emailed me "They pulled up information that extended our family tree one or two generations back! Including towns, and actual farms. I have some real material here to do some research on." Thank you so much for all your help. |
