Nobody in my family seems to have any clear idea of when my great grand father Hjalmer Melby emigrated to the USA from Norway. Any clues would be a help!!! Fascinating site! Thanks, Warren Melby

Hi Warren,
there is one Hjalmer Marrensius Melby in the norwegian 1900-census for Fredriksværen, Vestfold county. Is that your guy?
He is born 1885 in Larvik, Vestfold, father Johan Pettersen Melby & mother Martine.

If you can locate him in any US-census, it should be possible to find his emigration year. Where did he settle?

His brother Markus Melby (19) arrived at Ellis Island on Sep 03, 1913, sailing from Christiania Aug 22, with the ship The OSCAR II. He was going to New York, but the final destination is not his brother Hjalmer...

His father is listed as Johan Melby, Fredriksvarn, Norway

Jan Peter

Hello Warren.

Do you have any birthday for your great grandfather? It woild be more easy to narrow the search.

I have one "Hjalmar Melby" in my records..

Any other data, immigration, childrens name etc. would also be helpful

Thanks Berta and Jan for your help. Everyone on my father's side has passed away, so it's hard to gather much info. My mother is still alive and well(83), and has a pretty good memory, so I'll have to pester her with questions.
It's exciting to learn more about your genealogy, hopefully I'll be able to get more info and continue on. Thanks again!

Hello again Warren.

When you are asking for information, ask for where he might have lived in the US also. This could also give clues to his origin.

It would be thrilling if the one "Hjalmar" I have, is the one you seek. He is not an ancestor of mine. I think also one of "mine" Hjalmars sisters could have emigrated.

But, I think more can help you, when you have birthdate/year and some more information. As I wrote. This helps to narrow the search.

Berta
