I would like to find collateral branches of my OLSEN family still in Norway. Here are my great-grandparents:
Johan OLSEN Gjerde, born 6-Oct-1848 in Nordalen (Møre og Romsdal), emigrated via Halifax to the Portland Oregon area from Bergen 18-Mar-1874 (probably on the S/S Hibernian of the Allen Line), died 13-Nov-1920 in Portland Oregon.
Oline CHRISTIANSDTR. Engeseth, born about 1849 in Nordalen, emigrated via New York from Bergen 10-May-1879 (probably on the S/S Germanic of the White Star (Stjerne) Line), died 16-Mar-1942 in Clackamas County Oregon.
I believe Johan to have been the son of Ole JOHNSON (b. about 1809) and Gurine RASMUSDTR. (b. about 1822). I also think Johan had these siblings, all born in Nordalen: Inger OLSDTR. (b. about 1846) Else OLSDTR. (b. about 1849) Thomas OLSEN (b. about 1852) Nicoline OLSDTR. (b. about 1858) Elen Malene OLSDTR. (b. about 1863) Jens OLSEN (b. about 1863) (a twin?)
I can provide quite a bit of detail about the extended OLSEN family in America, which might be of interest to a Norwegian OLSEN genealogist. |

You should also consider looking for a genealogy group possibly based in Norddal or a local historical society (I have no idea if one exists). Starting at the genealogy society at the level of Møre og Romsdal might be a good start. http://mr.disnorge.no/

You will find Johan's birth/baptismal record on page 17 of the Norddal church book which includes 1848 baptisms. That is digitized/scanned and available at the Digitalarkivet website.

You might consider joining a Bygedelag for Møre og Romsdal:
http://www.fellesraad.com/
You can rent the Canadian passenger list microfilms at a local Family History Center. |

Oline Engeseth, age 29, arrived at the Port of New York on June 6, 1879 on the S/S Baltic of the White Star Line, passenger #593.
She is incorrectly identified as being Danish, this was very common, mixing up the Norwegians, Swedes, Danes. She would have been processed for immigration at Castle Garden, one month before the big fire. |

Thank you all for your responses to my post! These leads look very exciting. I promise to follow up in detail on each and every one.
I have been working intermittently on genealogy for several years and this is the most helpful website that I have found thus far. You are to be commended. |

The question of the two apparent siblings named "Sakarias" is answered in the Nordalen church register for 1850 (line 22 of burials). The first brother died at age 3 weeks. Evidently the parents wanted to re-use the given name with their next-born son. Was this a common practice?

Yes, very common. Recommend you read the article on this site - Those Norwegian Names.
Excerpt:
"When a couple was married and had children, the custom was that the first born son was named after his paternal grandfather, with the exception of when a man married a woman and took over her father's farm, then we usually se the first born son named after the maternal grandfather. The second born son would usually be named after his maternal grandfather. The first born daughter was usually named after her paternal grandmother, and the second born daughter after her maternal grandmother. There were some other exceptions, when one of the spouses died, and the remaining remarried. The first born child of the same sex as the deceased was named after him or her. Also, if one of the parents of an unborn child died prior to the child being baptized, one would name a child of the same sex as the deceased, after him or her. If a child died, the next born child of the same sex was usually named after the deceased child. "
If both the mother and the father's mother had the same name, then two of the daughters would have the same name.
