How can I find out where the marriage records for the early 1900's are from the Norwegian Seaman's Church in NY. I know the church is no longer there, but the records should be somewhere. I am trying to find records for Torvald Abrahamsen and Karen Hansen. |

Have you found them in the 1910, 1920 and 1930 census? That would narrow down the approximate year of marriage. Before approaching an archive, you need to determine if, in fact, they were married in New York. They should be in this great, free website for New York City records, Brooklyn is in Kings County and the Brides index is complete for the early 1900’s.

Here is where to get an uncertified copy of a pre-1930 marriage record in all five boroughs:

Here are the ELCA archives; check on Geneology for information on what is available. I have had good luck sending an email inquiry about what records are actually available, no actual email research.

A quick Google search came up with a lot of current Norwegian Seamens Church references in New York City.
Norwegian Seamen's Church The Norwegian Seamen's Church was on 1st Place and Clinton St., Brooklyn. This was owned by the Norwegian government and was subsequently sold. There is now a small church in Manhattan.
Norwegian Seamen's Church 317 E. 52nd St. New York, New York 212-319-0370.
I doubt if they have the old records but they could probably give you some information where to find them. Unless you know pretty close to the exact date of marriage, you are not going to be get much help from an archive or you are not going to want to pay the fees to have them search for you, it is tedious and time consuming work going through old ledgers, microfilms, up to a 9 month response time.
Finding them in the civil records first is the way to go, as then you are sure they were actually married in one of the boroughs of New York. The marriage certificate would give the name of the person performing the ceremony, with that information; the archives can cross-check their records by minister and determine where he was serving as a minister. If you cannot find them in the civil records, then there is really no point in contacting an archive, New York City has excellent records.

Hi Karen, As far as I know, you can find these records at the Statsarkivet in Bergen, Norway. You can also find quite a few lists if you visit Digitalarkivet and choose Utlandet (abroad) at the digital inn. Good luck Ellen |
